First France Trip a success (1 Viewer)

Well it was touch and go, I bored every funster to death waiting for our van to finish in time, we missed 3 deadlines !! Then it was the trauma of the dislocated shoulder, yep, I moaned about that on here too

However, as first time 'france funsters' we did really well. Some of the Aires were dire, especially the first one after the bridge, on Ile de Re, some were amazing..... Dinan !! We used a lot of ACSI sites due to shoulder issue and found it a thoroughly good deal, stayed at some gems and will order next years book too. We learned that a rough plan was good, but that to stray from it lead to amazing landscapes and experiences, we'll do that again.

We had one not so nice experience with a British female, we arrived at Roche de Bernarde, an aire next to a camp site and marina. Arrived 10 mins fore closing, in the dark, very tired and dirty after 6 hot hours driving. Too late for the code for the showers etc, saw British lady, asked very politely if she knew the code, yes she did. Would she give it to us ? No. I said we would welcome a hot shower and were tired, she said well there's public loos down the road !!!!! Fortunately a lovely British couple gave us the code just a few mins later.

We've loved our trip, enjoyed Le Shuttle immensely and will be going again in June for 2 weeks and Sept for 3 weeks. So this was just an update and a thank you to all funsters who've helped with conversion equipment advice, travel advice, aire/acsi advise and just general support and a good laugh. We'll get our funster sticker next year and try and make a few rallies. Really lovely to be part of such a wonderful online community. Thanx very much

Think so, there was a barrier between that and the actual site. First one across the toll bridge. The campsite wasn't much better to be honest. We ended up going further in, almost bedless by late evening and eventually settled into a mozzie-filled site back on to a medieval wall. Thankfully, before we left the next morning, cursing the Ile de Re, we took a look at Les Varennes, stunning; stayed there 2 nights and will go back for longer next time.

spent 3 nights there the weekend before last, wasnt too bad, there was two of us and we got the spots in the gate on the left so we had some room behind the vans, and leccie. Went upto the top end of the island for a few days after that at Camping Les baleines, quite good as well

Funnily enough - first time we went there we wernt impressed either, wasn't really keen to go this time but thought wed give it a go and loved it. But I dont think id want't be there when its busy!!

Glad you enjoyed your first trip to France. We are confirmed France lovers, been 3 times this year and may squeeze another long weekend in!

We went over in June Snowdrop, only 2nd time out in the van due to illness, managed to squeeze in a bit of wild camping around Ypres in Belgium, the Menin Gate ceremony is very humbling, had 4 or 5 days in Holland, Mrs Hymie wanted to see windmills but we only ever found 1 and that had the sails removed, and that only left us 2 days in France.

We are going back over early October for a week, plan, as with most, is to leave ferry, turn right and see where we get to.

Glad you enjoyed your first trip over, addictive, isn't it.

Yes Hymie, it really is addictive. The hubby is babbling on about buying the flexi option with Le Shuttle as he fancies a few long weekends there too. Really pleased we went down as far as St Jean de Luz tho, amazing place and defo gonna spend longer there next Sept. Lived in Belgium for long time, still has fair few windmills, if you want any specific info gis a shout as still have good friend living there.

PS .............. the compressor fridge is incredible, wld last approx 5 days wildcamping.

I'll bear that in mind, thank you. We were impressed with Belgium, lovely people.

We will follow some of your footsteps in Oct, hoping to get to I de R, then we are going to Twin Lakes next May for JaG's birthday meet, few days there and then the rest of the fortnight mooching around the countryside, but I am sure we will do a few long weekends ourselves, don't think we could go without a French injection for 8 months.

Glad you enjoyed your first French trip.
That Aire on the ile de Re is tiny--very cramped. The campsite is better once you get into it and get a pitch looking onto the beach.
May you have many more successful visits to France !

We have just returned from our first trip to France.
We went for one month and booked the ferry out of Calais and the return.
We had a rough idea of where we wanted to go....but nothing fixed....we also listened
to other M.H. owners and got some good advice.
We used Aires, free ones and paid for and ACSI and Campsites both municipal and private.
Route was Calais, Bayeux, Mont St Michel, Vendee ( St Jean de Mont and Chatalaen Plage ), Isle Du Re and then down the Loire valley, Saumur, Azay, Loches, Montjean
We had a great time...but thank goodness I had cruise control fitted a couple of weeks
before we went....about 2000 miles door to door. Mike and Les
