An amazon Firestick is an easy way to open up access to streamed videos.
If you have amazon Prime then there is a lot of content available that you are already subscribed too. (y)
If you don't have Prime membership then all is not lost as BBC iPlayer, All 4, ITV etc. all have apps that Firestick can run.

People also add the Cinema HD app - I haven't but the next time me remembering this app coincides with me being in front of the telly I will load it.
Also, lots add an app called Kodi to widen the choice (of copied movies? not sure).

Last thing on the Amazon firestick, we prefer the 4K version as it is more responsive in the navigation - even on none-4K TV.

A Now TV stick from Sky is similar but more limited in features?? Roku made this stick for Sky, iirc
And Roku have their own stick
etc. etc. ;)

Ditto all of the above but for me one of the key benefits is that if you have a TV without any means of connecting to the internet but does have an HDMI input, then the firestick is very cheap way of prolonging the life of the TV and allowing one to access content via the web.

We use it on an old Panasonic TV which was high spec in it's day but a bit long in the tooth by today's standards. God knows when it will break!

I replaced my earlier version Firestick with a 4k a few months ago. The difference in speed and reliability of connection is impressive. The 4k responds almost instantly. It also allows a VPN to be loaded, too, which is useful.

Me is bogalised !
I think I will just keep taking our TalkTalk box with lots of films on.
Doh.

Also take the old sunvision hdmi mmp
Loads of films etc without buffering or data use
For those occasional wet days

Thank you kevenh and clanjones that's exactly what I wanted to know, simple and easy to understand explanations of it all rather than having to wade through all the stuff on the web.

We have a good Samsung TV but it's not 'smart' and although hubby has made 'noises' about getting another there's actually no reason to change it at all as it works fine and is the right size for our room ... at present he downloads stuff onto a hard drive and then sticks that into the TV but sometimes it doesn't like the format so being able to stream it would mean less hassle.

We don't have any subscriptions to the likes of Netflix, Prime etc so not bothered about that.

What sort of data usage does it gobble up for say a standard quality 1 hour TV programme?

Simple answer
Yes and Yes
But using a much simpler method ,initially using tablet or PC then side loading, apks needed can also get rid of Amazon bloatware if need be.
Once on fill your boots.

As already mentioned uses approx 1gb data per hour
Though your favorite radio stns back home slightly less.
Use of a VPN is your choice

Making a standard TV a Smart TV is what a firestick & similar can do ;)

At home are you on a broadband with a data usage cap? Or is your concern about data usage for MH travels?
From some 3 year old Firestick videos it looks like you can choose lower video quality for the streams.

What amazon bloatware is there?
The fire OS?
The Amazon menus?
Is this jailbreak not just to get dodgy copies of movies?

Just ordered the latest 4K Firestick to replace our old one that we never used as it was too slow, and needed to be plugged into the 240V mains supply to work.
I am hoping that the new one will be adequately powered by placing the firestick into an HDMI slot and the power lead plugged into an available USB to enable it to work in the van.
I can see the advantage of using a VPN for streaming privacy, been meaning to set one up for ages, I see plenty of offerings coming through from Mcafee, Avast, etc but they are all subscription services.
Anyone know if there is a VPN free version available, if so was it easy to install?
Thanks for any help on this.

Minxy Girl I found this on the web for you.

HD quality video is between 720p and 2K (remember, the app adjusts the stream). HD-quality video uses about 0.9GB (720p), 1.5GB (1080p) and 3GB (2K) per hour. UHD quality video uses a lot of data. A 4K stream uses about 7.2GB per hour

You are able to set the video quality on the firestick which will reduce the data consumption. If you decide to buy a firestick then the 4k version is the way to go. If you don't subscribe to prime you will be able use catch up TV channels.

We find prime good value as you have access to all sorts of content including music which we use when away in the motorhome.

PS I am not an Amazon shareholder!

B——y hell, I’ll just stick to the aerial or sat dish, I used may brain too much when I was dodging the bank manager when I was working, I have put what’s left of my brain into retirement with the rest of me. Perhaps that is why I talk to my sheep so much !

At the end of the day, if you know how to get a set top box to your TV and also how to add devices to your wifi this Firestick stuff is easy ;)

Likewise, we find that for £80 a year we get free delivery and they show a lot of tennis for the other half, plus the odd game of footy - good value if you use it

Please help a thicko

You have to buy a subscription to Amazon?
You have to buy a firestick?
You have to buy at least 30Gb of data to watch 1 hour per day of TV per month?
You have to buy an WiFi amplifier to guarantee and decent reception?

Is that right? I really want to adopt this modern technology.

1 You get Prime Video content already if you have Amazon Prime for shopping, etc.
There are other content providers.
2 Well, for using a TV with Prime, yes. But there’s other content providers and hardware or you can watch Prime Video on a tablet / smart phone and, again there’s other content providers
3 depends on how much you watch or the quality of video. I only FS at home 😳 (use a tablet in the MH for Sky, Prime, etc.)
4 no. wait, do you want to boost a campsite’s WiFi, then yes. Otherwise you prob. need a 4G WiFi Mifi thingy.

How many gb of data would you use for 6 hours TV watching and 3-4 hours of listening to Radio 2 per day
