I'm a newbie
I understand I need an invertor off grid to use firestick but I have now been told I also need a dropper for
firestick to drop to 5w. Can anyone explan?

We have neither and use the Firestick when not on EHU. Firestick is powered from USB socket on TV.

We use our firestick powered off the USB socket on our Finlux TV with no problem.

Our Manta TV USB doesn't have enough oomph to power the Firestick so we have to use a separate USB socket. No biggy as it's in the TV cupboard anyway

Are you using firestick offgrid via an invertor?

What generation firestick are you trying to use?
I have an old fire tv box and that can’t be run from a usb port, odd I know. Best to set up a fire stick from a “proper” USB port as on my tv there wasn’t enough oomph from the usb on the tv. Apparently the set up process needs a little more power. Once set up it runs perfectly from a usb on the tv.

It is possible that the OP doesn't have usb sockets. Looking elsewhere I see they have a 2002 Burnster Harmony 625. Were there USB sockets in 2002? Is there a usb socket on the TV?

An alternative would be a converter from a 12V socket to USB.

Not enough detail from the OP on why they need an inverter.

Sorry for lack of info. I have a 24" tv with usb for firestick works ok on ehu. If off grid I understand that I need an inverter I'm just trying to establish what size inverter to buy ( just for tv / firestick use) and do I need any thing else apart from wifi of course.

I had a cheap 150 w inverter which was ok for the tv and sky box😊

So the inverter is for the TV? Is not a 12V TV aswell? Most motorhomes/caravans have multi voltage TV's?

Yes just for the tv and firestick. Tv is not 12v

Thanks for all the info guys. Love this site everyone is so helpful. Sorry for all the questions never used off grid before just trying to set up. 😊

If you don't have access to a USB socket use a battery pack (The sort you would use to recharge a mobile phone) to power the Firestick

Edit: As above, I'd also recommend a 12v TV, in which case you can ensure you get one with a USB port to run the firestick.

Cheers

In that case you will need an inverter for the TV but depending on your TV it may be worth investing in a 12v TV.
Can you post a photo of the label on the back of your TV so we can advise.

Interesting…..we have a Manta tv (24”) and a 4K Firestick (faster processor) and it works just fine from the tv usb……

When I had my camper van and not on EHU, I would plug it into my PowerOak which worked fine (if you don't have a USB for the TV, or another USB outlet close-by.

You can also run the TV off the PowerOak, which saves using the leisure battery and extend your non EHU stay.

Since getting the motorhome, I've got 2 x 24" 12v smart TV's, so no need for the Firestick.

I found "smart" TVs to be not very smart at all. In fact your dependant on the TV manufacturers app support to keep them so called smart, which stops as soon as that model is superceded.
The only way to make them "Smart" again if the app you want is no longer supported would be to replace them.
I prefer a firestick which is cheap to replace, is compatible with all the present and future services paired to a 24" 12v monitor.
My present setup is a Samsung Monitor which was supplied with a 14v power pack but is happy to run on 12v and a 4k Firestick running on the USB from the Monitor. This cheap and neat set up draws very little from the batteries when off grid and avoids power wasteful inverters.

Too true - the Manta tv we bought is ‘dumb’, only having a freeview tuner….. (y)

Just for information…
the previous owners of our van only used the tv on EHU. If there is a transformer in your3 pin plug power tv cable then you may have a TV that runs of 12v too? Check that there is a 12 v input on the back of your set. Worth having a look. I then bought a 12v supply from cig socket. Now all runs of the pleasure batteries 👍👍

I like the sound of those……do they bring a smile to your face as well….?!?:xwink:
Oh yes. that’s why I have them! The pleasure of leisure off grid. No typo there. Do need to replace the old lead acids though.

So it is a 240V only TV. Do you have a 12V socket near to the TV?

The TV looks to consumes 17W. The firestick should be powered by the USB socket on the TV in which case something like this inverter could power the TV.

This one helpfully has a usb socket on it too!

Is this a good buy? Company Sunshine Solar ltd
