We have for many years had breakdown cover for our 2 cars and the motorhome with Green Flag as AA and RAC don’t cover our van. Well…..except after actually ringing Green Flag to add European breakdown I discovered that they would never have covered us abroad !!! 7m length…fine, 2.5m wide…fine, 3.2m high…….nope. I am pretty sure I have never been asked for the height when I applied otherwise I obviously wouldn’t have taken it out. Good job we never broke down. I was told it’s because if they container it back it’s too high to fit in. Anyhoo……thumbs up to Caravanguard ( already with them for general van insurance) very helpful yesterday so all good to go next week. France here we come :giggle:

Red Pennant is Green Flag overseas in EU (C&MC)

Can I take it the 3.2m high issue is just for abroad?

Arrival/RAC Breakdown with the Camping and Caravanning Club cover ANY size and weight motorhome.

Mrs mikebeaches and I also covered to drive any other vehicle too - so covers our cars as well. (y)

Container it back, that's concerning in itself, back of a low-loader not a problem but in a box how do they strap it down? you cannot get around it

I’m glad you found out now rather than later.

Yup…I am just relieved that I have never broken down abroad  could have been very awkward.
Happened to a friend he was insured with one of the breakdown services and it took a lot of persuasion to get a transporter long enough to take his car. they tried to say it was in the small print I explained that on the form that was completed it asked what was the car . It was a vintage (old) jag. they should have refused to take the money they eventually contracted a van big enough to take it . I suggested it took it straight to the scrapyard my friend was not impressed and sulked for a week :roflmto:

I bet he did

It appears so..something to do with putting it in a container to bring it back ,..but who knows ?

Odd as I’ve never been asked the height of out Moho.

Having said that we don’t intend going over the water this year.

But thanks for the heads up 👍

There are usually lashing points within the container however not that easy to access given the length of the vehicle.

However, the height is a concern given a high cube container is, generally, only around 2.9m internal height however this is reduced by, probably, around 100mm for the door lintel. The bigger however is the width of a standard container is, generally, only 2.3m with a pallet-wide (European trades) being 2.45m wide but reduced marginally by the door pillars.
So, not only will they have to cut off the roof but both sides as well.
At least you get the chassis home in one piece!:whistle2:

Never mind tying it down how would anyone get out after applying handbrake? Given the container dimensions quoted above I doubt any motorhome could safely be carried home in a container. Except perhaps a PVC with sliding door.

I think that by container they could mean a specialised covered vehicle carrier

Where there is a will, there's a way!! and not all containers actually have sides!!

Thanks for bringing this up though, I've just gone to my insurance and breakdown to clarify if my Flair is ok. I'm with Caravan Guard as well so hopefully all sorted. Asked if my glass was fully covered too!

Breakdown cover is a minefield especially if you're over 3500kg, 3m high or 8m long and then if you want 90 days European cover be prepared to read plenty of small ptrint 😡

We are 4.5 ton when we broke down in France they sent a transit with double back wheels to lift us to a garage to say it was bouncy going along is an understatement 😂

Working for the USSCo on the Inter-Island and the Trans-Tasman routes we used Container Bases (ie. no roof or sides) for over height and over long loads. Perhaps that's what "they" mean when they say "containers"

yep….. though a specialised vehicle carrier might be better
  1. Bolster or flat rack containers – They are made for irregular cargo and may have collapsible or fixed end walls at either end. They are used for out-of-gauge/oversized cargo, machinery, drums and barrels and other similar items.
