Returned 2015 after many years of kids and other expenses!
Apologies @Dorset Diver re-reading my response it does seem to be a bit rude and abrupt. Wasn't criticising what you were saying, and definitely didn't mean to shoot the messenger.

In this months MMM Fiat have acknowledged there is a problem and are working on a fix which involves illuminating the dash when the ignition is turned on. They say it will not be ready until the end of March. If you want to take advantage of the free upgrade then you need to contact Fiats free number which is 0080034281111 or visit the web site fiatcamper.com. Chasper.

I have tried driving with the lights on and the dash illumination set to its highest and IMO unless they increase the level of illumination just having the light on during the day will not cut it.

Can't find any mention of the problem on that website.

Does this just cover the X250 or does it also cover the new X290?

P.S. no reflection on Chasper's hard work

Did you both have it done to cure this problem or for other reasons?
Our was changed because other warning lights came on when cruise control was on.
On our Peugeot ( same speedo as Fiat) I can't see the kms scale at all when the headlights are off, but the mph scale is easy enough. Saying that, I always go by the sat nav speed display.

Agree the red dash lighting is awful especially on the small KMH figures.

The KMH are much easier to read in daylight with a replacement Lockwood dial us left hookers fit, it has white KMH figures rather than the red. Nothing to stop you fitting one to a RHD vehicle.

You need to dial 00800 (ie double 0) at the front, not the 'common' 0800 and it will work.

Just rang the number above and registered my concern about the lighting of the speedo ,spoke to a very nice lady who took my details and will open a case for my van and pass it on to the camper van manager who will be in touch . If you ring you will need your chassis number and reg . I am well aware that I might have been fobbed off but it seemed a good start so thanks all for the advice :)

Just called them using the "00" as detailed by Minxygirl. Worked for me but I did not have my VIN number so couldn't register on the phone. They gave me an email address of customercare.uk@fcagroup.com. Hopefully that will work when I email them tonight. The guy on the end of the phone didn't know what sort of fix Fiat are going to do.

This afternoon, Friday 15th Jan 2016, I received a call from Carole, customer support FIAT Italy. The message she had for me was that sometime in April / May, I assume this year; my MH will be fitted with a fix for the “can’t see the instruments in daylight” problem. The fix is a wiring change that will turn the instrument lighting on with the ignition. I pointed out that I have been able to achieve the same by switching the lights on during the day and that it does not fully solve the issue; the illumination is just not adequate. It is still not possible to see the instruments clearly in some lights. The lovely Carole promised to pass my comments on to the FIAT designers but was adamant their fix would work. I think we are being fobbed off by a cheap less than satisfactory response to their design failure.

My 7-8 yr old cheap Toyota car has brightly illuminated dials during the day that dim when the lights are switched on. The dials couldn't be any easier to see.
Why is it so difficult for a huge company like Fiat to do something similar for what end up as very expensive vehicles?

Richard.

I think we just need to wait and see what they come up with before making any judgement.

I also had a call from FIAT saying that they would contact me again when the fix is available. They also informed me that they did not have a record of when the MH was first registered. The dealer had not informed Fiat that they had sold a vehicle on one of their chassis! I had to send a copy of the inside page of the V5!

@Dorset Diver They rang me last year and told me there was going to be a fix albeit a simple one but did not go any further and told me they will contact me when ready, as no particular details were given we will have to wait and see.noted that your comments will be passed on and thanks for that.Is your van LHD?

I had the same problem stevec. The biggest two problems are that you cannot now apply for extended warranty and if your vehicle is not registered properly you may not have the included warranty and breakdown cover.

Alan my point is they did give me details of the fix today. It is not a case of wait and see.

@Dorset Diver Ours is and in previous posts it was discussed especially in an A class that the natural light coming in can have an effect on the visibility of the dash as Speedo is still on my left as in RHD. I will try with the lights on in daylight and report back.

@Speve I am not sure I understand your point but if it is that yours is LHD and therefore the speedo being on the left get more natural light then that may be the case as opposed to a RHD. It is also one of the arguments FIAT have put forward for their failure to comply with the EU law governing such things which simply states the speedo shall be clearly visible to the driver at all times and in all conditions.

@Dorset Diver yes that may be the case as the light coming in is not blocked as much but I haven't tested that theory.Ill let you know later.

@Dorset Diver Hi I have done a test with lights on and you're right it makes very little difference. I don't know if you speedo dial is the same but both MPH & KPH are in white I believe some are in red don't know if that makes any difference?
