Hi, when on our trip to the Orkneys the Engine management light came on ,it went into limp mode, there was no one on the island that knew enough to tackle the problem, so we drove home ! was ok mpg was ok but it died on every hill, we did get home though.
To it too local garage I use and problem was soon diagnosed , a fuse to the glow plugs had blown (10amp) this was replaced and removed three of the faults !
Final fault is the throttle body workings and it seems it is/has been a Fiat recall as there is a modified one available and it includes replacement wiring loom.
It has been order and will be fitted next week, will let you know what the improvements are !
Do not know the cost involved yet but will also advise once I receive it.
BTW it is a 2011 Autotrail Scout on Fiat Ducato with 3 litre 160BHP engine and 6 speed manual gearbox , only 24500 miles on it.

Always worth having a VAG reader so you can diagnose what triggers the lights. Twenty quid off eBay. Or a Bluetooth one that syncs with a head unit or phone app.

Hope swiftly and inexpensively repaired.

We have also encountered this problem on a 3.0 litre 160 engine. you can tell if the valve has failed when you turn the engine off it shuts down in a lumpy noisy way. One of the functions of the valve is to cut the air to the engine to facilitate a smooth shut down. Another function is to strangle the engine in order to create a vacuum to draw exhaust gases through the egr valve and into the engine. This was explained to me by our mechanic and the lumpy shutdown is very noticeable. The failure will be caused by water ingress in 9 out of 10 cases so pay attention to shielding. Ask me how I know as the saying goes.
Good luck with this
Steve

Doesn't it also still have a problem with water run off getting in it?

On our 2009 we had to have a new throttle body but fortunately was covered by the warranty. Apparently if not rectified the fault can overwork the EGR and cause that to fail. So I was told!

On a positive note I had a 3.0 daily pickup from new in 2008 , when I sold it in 2015 it had 355,000 miles on it , never broke down once , the only problem was it ate 2 diffs but it was towing a 3.5t trailer for at least 50% of that mileage

Sorry to read about your breakdown and i hope you are soon back on the road.

Cleaning the offending item only delays the inevitable......

The poorly protected starter motor on these engines also corrodes/fails and gives rise to a host of lovely starting problems, faults and error codes galore.

Could your pick up have been more reliable than the OP's as it was 2008 and his is 2011. Our first generation Iveco 3 litre motorhome, March 2005, still running lovely touch wood. But we have no fancy electronics, no CAT, no EGR etc.
