I’m a newbie
Hi all,

New to motorhoming this summer and we love it!!

But we have a little issue with our old girl! It’s a 1999 5speed box.

The gear box is rattling.... it goes when you depress the clutch.

So far the gearbox has been stripped twice and bearings replaced, oil replaced and assessed to be ok.

New clutch

New starter motor...

Has anybody experienced this before?

Oo err, that does sound a bit scary. Were the gearbox rebuilders a reputable bunch ?

Take it to a different garage, just so they can have a listen.

And :welcome4: to the group.

Did the same company do the job twice ? Deffo sounds like clutch fault/spigot bearing/thrust bearing or clutch plate. Could even be plate in wrong way round. Would get a different garage to strip and diagnose.

Did they fit a 3 piece clutch or just the drive/friction plate?

Sounds like the clutch release bearing rattling. Make sure you have breakdown cover and get some ear plugs .. :xThumb: ..

Normally, if rattle goes away when clutch is depressed points to a noisy thrust bearing.
Vauxhalls were particularly bad for the noise , could go for thousands of miles after first noise heard.
Don't know if you're in AA or RAC , a chat with one of their guys might help.
Hope all goes well and CHEAPLY,
John

Can't remember ;)
sounds to me like it's your clutch or presure plate -- thrust bearing replace
On one of my vans I had to replace the gear selecter spring -rattle drove me nuts but did not sound like your video---spring was replaced by unscrewing the gearstick and if I remember right replaced the spring and a washer --it went quiet when clutch depressed or held onto gearstick --hope it helps and :pink:

All the gear, and no idea!
Another one here for the clutch bearing to be at fault, it’s probably very dry hence the rattle.

Just looking
Well mine does this, I've put it down to gearbox bearing noise, but sounds like I may have been wrong. I have heard that the 2.8 engined vans had gearbox issues, and know a few people who've had failures.
Ps, ditto the starter and clutch. For info the starter fails because water runs down from the screen, onto the engine, and onto the starter. My second one failed last summer, it was soaking inside.

Don't think we'll ever find out.
It's been 18 days and the op hasn't been seen since posting this thread..... And for unknown reasons their name is still in green like many other guests who have been here many weeks, months, or in one or two cases, years.

Beats me why people bother going to the trouble joining then not bother checking responses or replying.
Why not write the question down on paper then pop it in the bin at home.

Probably people are going the bits that have been done already ( gearbox rebuilt twice - clutch replaced most people would do the whole lot - starter motor replaced ) maybe that is why he has not responded and decided to live with it
