The heater fan on my Hymer based on a 2001 Fiat Ducato has decided to stop working, checked fuse in glove box and now I know why there called fuses, it's melted into a blob and fused! it's self into the fuse box. I've got fuse out now with pliers.
Any idea what could have caused it to get so hot and not blow.

Motor seized, or control rheostat gone t**s up, probably. If you can get to the fan blades, even with a long screwdriver, see if they turn.

Cheap, inferior fuses.

Chinese fuses are dangerous and as proved, dont always blow anywhere near their rated amps.
If by any chance it is a quality fuse check the fuse holder in the fusebox for loose contact with the fuse.

A poor contact between blade and holder can cause excessive heat.

Checked out fan, turns ok and checked rheostat and that looks ok, no discolouration so I think pappajohn's right with poor contact on fuse.
Now looking for a replacement fuse board because fuse doesn't want to go in now!
Cheers

Finally got around to sorting this fault. I used a inline blade fuse carrier and fitted from under the fuse box from feed side of trouble fuse and all working fine now. So I think papajohn was right about loose fuse contector.
Thanks all

Such good feedback and a successful outcome!
Just the way I think these tech threads should be!

In my experience of automotive electrics, a bad connection is the culprit when it comes to melted plugs and fuse holders. I have come across fuses that have looked suspiciously thick for their claimed ratings as well though!

Just had a similar problem with the 30 amp fuse in my on board charger. One blade was bent so that whilst it was still making a contact it had not located correctly into the fuse holder, resulting in a melted fuse.

How about this for an old thread revival, had a smell today in glove box , checked fuses-non hot, removed fuse board and found this , it’s the fuse holder I had fitted earlier in this thread, I think it’s knackered, good job it didn’t cause a fire.

I think I will need to check fan and resistor when I get back to uk.
