Hello everyone

My near side wing mirror took a bashing from a lorry turning left on an inside lane. The overhang on the lorry caught the mirror and it was knocked forward shattering the plastic on the arms. There is a little internal damage but it is not seen and the mirror is fully functional. I have taken the van to a Fiat dealer who quoted £454 + vat. They will only install a new mirror.

Anyone know where I can get the plastic part that covers the arm, or even a replacement plastic shell for the mirror.

I salvaged this bit off the road and it has a part number which may be helpful.

The van is a 2017 plate

Thanks

I shattered a mirror on our Ducato, got one off ebay £170 with all the electrics only thing it didn't have the radio aerial in it which has been a bit of a pain.

Check these people out. Prices much less than main dealers.

I noticed he has no listing for Commercial or Motorhome Mirrors.

Thanks.

I've sent an email and images to the wing mirror man. I'll see what he comes up with.

I've used the wing mirror ma and he is excellent. telephone call with him made everything clear about what the difference was between the alternatives

I don’t suppose you got the lorries number or had dash cam footage of it, expensive when it’s not your fault

You need to determine what the arm length is before you check for a new one.most motorhome have medium or long arms as opposed to the standard basic van on short arms.one type doesn't suit the others. (y)
They are relatively straightforward to fit. Just don't pull through too many wires from your door internals (y)

It was a Royal Mail lorry. I chased after him for 5 miles beeping and flashing my lights. He would not stop. I managed to get past him on a dual bit of road and stopped him. Got his details and insurance address.
I'm trying not to go through insurance yet as the excess will almost double the cost. Last time I made a claim, my van, car, wife car, daughter car insurance were all loaded. Even if its a no fault claim, I am considered a risk and the insurance will be loaded again!

I am dealing with Royal Mail Solicitors as a compensation claim for loss caused by their driver.

Unfortunately they are most likely to let their insurers sort it out and then the "claim" will be in your record for the next 5 years and you will require to declare it for every insurance you take out for 5 / 6 years. they will not pay out, outside of their insurers..
You can buy a new wing mirror complete for around £200 or less off eBay and half a day to fix it yourself.
It will cost you more in uplift premium costs.
I appreciate it's a pain but it happens a lot. I lost an offside mirror to an ambulance ,over the white line on a bend,by the time I had turned around ,he was gone .Cost me then,£150 plus some time and a learning experience in how to replace a mirror. (y)

I would now declare it. Information you’ve put on here alone would probably be enough for your insurance to give you grief should they find it. 🤷‍♂️

debatable, and irrelevant to the purpose of this post. (but a lorry or anything large turning left, its overhang is always going to swing out, personally i put the onus on myself not to be in its arc when it does so - obviously not much you can do if stationary though)

I found that the plastic rear part of the Ducato mirrors are available online for around £7 to17.
I had a brush with a lorry on a Welsh road between stone walls.
These pop back on and the indicator screws it in to place and secures it. Videos are online. The hardest part is getting the mirror glass in and out without cracking it. (Mirror glass is widely available for a tenner or less online).

As anyone been ‘ found out ?’ by not declaring an accident where it’s beneficial to get it repaired yourself ?

That will be the case put forward by the Royal Mail solicitors , artic drivers have a get out clause when manoeuvring their vehicles, hence the Angle morts stickers and * If you can't see my mirrors I can't see you* stickers and the cyclists beware stickers, All the driver has to say is that he took every precaution and must have missed seeing you. You will be lucky to get anywhere with them and I speak from experience of dealing with Royal Mail trying to get paid out over damage caused to my property by one of their employees! As regards the mirror I too used the mirror man for a Renault based van after *Turkish delivery white van man * took out my mirror in Germany when he was on the wrong side of the road, it was £130 I think. And was about 90mins to fit.

But he said he’s claiming through the Royal Mail. Next time he renews his policy one of the questions will be about ‘incidents’ whether a claim was made or not.

I’m guessing it will possibly go on a database somewhere now. 🤷‍♂️
