Hi all

Does anyone know if the Fiat Ducato generally comes with a real spare wheel, or just one of those emergency puncture repair jobs? Or nothing?

Thanks in anticipation.

As above no spare wheel or tyre, just a can of puncture gunk & an HD compressor to get tyre pressures up to 79PSI.
Bought a nearly new 16 inch alloy wheel & tyre on Gumtree, we were lucky to spot it though, and had to travel a distance to pick it up for £150.
Although alloy,Its heavy & stored in the Van Garage, hope we never need it.

I think it depends...

If you have a Panel Van Conversion, I believe the ordinary Ducato van probably comes with a spare wheel as standard. Our Rapido did.

However, if it is a modern coachbuilt van, then it is probably less likely to. The converters want to save weight (and cost) and so delete the option. Our last coachbuilt had waste water tank underneath where the spare wheel would have otherwise fitted.

We didn't get one in our Ford Transit base, so i went and got a steel one and rated tyre, heavy (about 220 brand new)! but peace of mind and the fact that Nationwide's recovery does not cover you if you do not have a spare.

I have a swift moho (2016) on a ducato base and also a ducato panel van for work (2016) and both have a spare wheel underneath the chassis

Depends on the converter & the model. Our first Hymer came with one as standard last 2 Hymers it's been an option. Had the option on the last van expensive as it came with a standard van tyre that didn't match the other tyres and didn't like where the bracket was for it in the garage. Bought my own for the current van.
Some converters don't even offer a spare as an option.

If buying your own make sure you get a rim with the correct load rating, most of the after market rims are not suitable for Motorhomes as they only have a 1000 kg load rating.

If it is a PVC then in theory there is space for a spare wheel behind the rear axle. However, some converters use this space for something else. :)

Helps boost the payload figure as well, I suppose.

I wouldn't buy a PVC without a spare wheel fitted as standard.

Our Ducato Maxi had no spare but when we bought it we DEMANDED one and then we put a spare wheel holder in the Garage as the supposed holder underneath wasn't there

Our best laugh was the previous owner who we met at the dealers offered us the old spare (an alloy) but he wanted £400 for it - no chance we got a free one -OK it's steel but it was a new one

Our Burstner didn't have a spare but did have the threaded inserts on the chassis. I bought a wind up carrier off ebay for £35 (ex ambulance apparently) and a good spare from a Funster. We were lucky that there were no tanks underneath to get in the way. Happy to accept the loss in payload in exchange for a solid spare.

We don't have a spare wheel on our Ducato base van as weight is a problem. I ensure our tyres are in good condition, correct pressure etc. Can't remember when I last had a puncture.

I Usually carry a Spare Tyre Only. No way I am changing wheels at the roadside. Most tyre fitters sent out have the means to swap a tyre. Strangely the latest, (2009 Rapido) came with a spare, the tyre is new but 10 year old!.

Probably down to age of vehicle old vehicles had proper spare my ducato has proper size spare wheel - but cars as well fitted silly spares but i dont know when the manufacturers started introducing the silly spare wheels - or now some with no spare wheel offered - someone else is sure to know what year silly spare wheels first started appearing

You have just been lucky, had puncture s in the last two vans this is the first van we haven't had one in. Last van got a puncture in a new tyre that had only done 50 miles.
No way would I travel anywhere without a spare.

Google has failed to find any statistics about how often a motorist might get a puncture or the average miles between punctures except for Michelin who say it is an average of 75,000 miles in Europe.

Long ago I read that it was an average of 1 puncture every 5 years. Possibly from the AA. When I lived in an up-and-coming urban area with many houses being done up it was quite often that a tyre picked up a screw or nail. Keeping well clear of kerbs and gutters helped.

You never know when fate will let your tyre down but it is almost certainly going to be when it is very inconvenient like when you are trying to catch a ferry.

We got the ferry from Barcelona to Civitavecchia end of March, when we came to disembark the fns tyre was flat and had a smashed valve (possibly from chains put on by ferry staff). Had to get the spare from the underside and jack it up using the standard Fiat equipment, mananged but it took a while, no chance of RAC getting onboard or gunk keeping the tyre inflated so wouldn’t be without a spare. At least I now know how to unmount the spare, getting a bottlejack and extendable wheel nut bar when we get back to the UK!

Maybe I have been lucky, or maybe you have been unlucky. Puncture after 50 miles. Yep, I think you must have been unlucky. My van is French with French insurance which automatically covers me for breakdown and relay to destination or home regardless. So I do have piece of mind knowing that.
The last puncture I had was in my Defender coming back from a trip across the Sahara. The tires were on there last legs before I went. That was five years ago. Before that I can't remember when I had my last puncture. I drove a white van for a couple of years and covered on average a hundred and thirty thousand kilometers a year for 8 years. I went through several vans, the last one I sold was a Sprinter van with 850,000 kilometers on it. During that time I had one puncture. If weight wasn't an issue I would probably go for a spare. Tyres these days are fairly reliable especially if you go for the premium brands and change them when they are 6 to 7 years old. I just hope having said this I don't temp fate. There are far more other things that can go wrong with MH. My wife has a Toyota Auris which we are selling. It has 285.000 kilometers, its 10 years old and the spare has never been used. My car is also 10 years old and the spare has never been used. Anyway, with a MH you can always make a brew or get your head down until the breakdown vehicle arrives.

Not the only one that's been lucky, suggest in this day and age most of us have been, had my last van for 4 1/2 years and no punctures over 50k miles, same with the 3 cars in the family, however, cant be complacent and I did check my breakdown cover covers me if or when I do get unlucky as neither the van or cars have a spare wheel (space saver in one to be fair)

I've had tyres that have lasted longer than some mechanical parts on the van. On my previous Fiat MH the gearbox went at twenty five thousand miles. That van did have a spare wheel, but no spare gearbox. Take life as it comes and enjoy it.

Autotrail had some brand new wheels for sale recently, do not know if they still have them. Might be a cheaper way of getting a spare.

My spare was underneath and the previous owner had put a full width tow bar on blocking the access door, so had to crawl underneath a very low chassis to get at it not advised on the motorway, I ended up putting it on the bike rack success

Our Chausson on a Ducati base came with spray tin.We bought a spare off Facebook User group from someone nearby. The grey water tank is in the way so it wont go underneath so it's in the garage.I'd rely on breakdown service to fit it.
Had at least 3 punctures in my car in the last three years- seems I'm the puncture magnet saving the rest of you..
