I'm a newbie
I’m having problem at the moment that is testing my patience. Early January started up the moho (2017 85) and got the airbag warning light up. Having now read up on the problems with these airbag modules especially around 2016/17 I was not very hopeful of getting it fixed. Took it down to a local garage in Guernsey to read the fault codes so that I could send it away to be fixed/reset. Sent it to Northern Auto Tech who cleaned it (worryingly some corrosion found) and repaired it. Received it back with report saying it would need proxi alignment if the odometer started flashing on reconnection, which it did. Oh, new starting battery fitted and that could have caused the problem. I actually think the whole batch of modules are faulty from what I’ve read.
Purchased Multiecuscan and the appropriate cable to do the proxi alignment and this is where I’ve got to. Connect up to the van and I can read every module, engine etc except the airbag module. Go to the Body module and it shows the airbag module as removed and not connected. Do the proxi alignment (having saved the original file just in case) and everything goes fine except no airbag module. Go back to the original proxi file and no airbag showing. I think the airbag module is goosed. I’ll go back to Northern Auto Tech on Monday to see what they say. Lots of people on Motorhomefun say don’t bother have them repaired/reset, don’t waste your money, just get anew fitted at Fiat for 2 year warranty. I now probably agree with that. I’ll let you know how I get on.

Had the airbag module back from Carl and this time everything went fine, or nearly. Airbag module installed and proxi alignment all done fine. Cleared the historic codes but I’m left with B0103-11, Driver airbag resistance (1st stage), short circuit to ground. Anybody have any experience of this and possibly where the fault may lay? Thanks in advance.

Well, after some further advice, I bought a new airbag module from Coastal Motorhomes, fitted and now no alarms. So the repaired module still had faults on it. I do wonder whether it’s worth getting them ‘repaired’. I could have saved money by just buying a new module from the start.

the corrosion mentioned has likely caused a physical fault on the circuit board. Sometimes these can be repaired, sometimes not. If you still have it, I could take a look, but no guarantee of the fix being possible. I can redo the solder joints and repair some damaged copper tracks, but when it gets down to the surface mount components being replaced, I don't have a magnifying scope these days

Can you give some idea of the costs, for reference, ie the ecu unit and the multiscuscan please.

My Motorhome goes in next week to have the airbag light checked out, if it does turn out to be a faulty ECU I shall get a new one fitted. Pointless having it refurbished and no real guarantee.

Its so anoying that Fiat never admitted there was a problem with the 2017/18 airbag ECU's they let people suffer and pay the expense of getting a new ECU, I think the last I heard that was £400 from Fiat, parts & labour. The Part number was different also, and may have had an additional chassis earth cable mod done at the same time.

To my knowledge Fiat have been fitting the same module to Ducato since 2011
It would be nice to know if they have now changed the part number.

Can somebody check it out?

Stealaway There are more than one type of airbag module fitted on the Fiat / Peugeot vans , your model is a different part number to some others , Coastal Motorhomes have your type £262.28 (+ vat = £314.74) and other years/module models are different prices.

Which one is 100% reliable?

The picture clearly shows it marked as Euro 5 which is up to 2016 (I think) so perhaps they are different after that.

The picture clearly shows it's dated 24/02/11. :Eeek:

Are they different after that - Its what I ned to know. It could be important if you are buying a newer one

What I meant by my reply was that you originally said "To my knowledge Fiat have been fitting the same module to Ducato since 2011" but as the basic vehicle engine control electronics changed with Euro 6 it would have not been the same module as yours on the newer vans and as GeoffnDee mentioned there are several version available, perhaps they are not interchangeable?

The part number on your module is listed for 2011 - 2014 models ,but there can even be different part numbered modules needed for these years for many reasons ,including , airbag and safety set ups , ie. Driver only , Driver + 1 passenger seat , Driver + duel passenger seating etc , etc.

There's a good few different part numbers that all look identical fitted to various Fiat cars and vans. I don't think they would have had any ready to change the airbag module because of the change to Euro 6 engine's

I don’t think the year makes must difference - mine was 2014 and went faulty just before MOT due and had to wait 3 months for new ECU! 😡 I’ve a new Rapido on the Fiat Ducato - shame they didn’t do it on a Ford Transit

The one from my 2017 Euro 6:
01390298080
Serial no. 01028
Date 10/11/16

Replacement fitted last October:
000-46858203
Serial no. 00350
Date 25/05/22

Looking at the way the serial numbers run I would say there are a lot of different versions.

Are any of them lasting for more than a year or two?
It seems not
Do they fit airbags to Mercs and Tranny's

The airbag ECU on my 2015 Hymer worked until 2020. Sent it to Crash Data for repair and it is still working OK. The main reason I sent it for repair rather than buying a new one was because new ones were as rare as rocking horse poo. And at the time because we were in lockdown. If it fails again I will get the garage to replace it with a new one.

Is this change of ECU a job that you can do yourself or do you need a proper mechanics head?

Replacing the air bag ecu is simple but you need the software and a bit of knowledge to proxi align it.

Sorry about the late reply, been busy and not looking on here. The airbag module is £257, I think. I got it for £215 as live in Guernsey. Multiecuscan is €50 once you have downloaded it. The ELM correct cables were £24.95 from eBay, make sure you get one that is modified for MES plus the yellow one is required for airbag etc. I sound all knowledgeable but in reality I didn’t know anything about all this to start with. All I knew was that I didn’t want to take it to my local Fiat commercial garage in Guernsey, ££££.
