I have been spending time in my van on the drive ...hooked up to electric... but the engine fan has now started kicking in on a regular basis. After it has been runnning a while I can stop it by turning key but not immediately. Really weird. Can anyone advise please.

If the engine is not getting too hot, then I would check the thermistor probe that turns the fan on & off, if you can locate it that is. Trace the wiring maybe, others will know more I guess, but at least the fan is working, some modern diesel cars leave the fan running at high speed for 15/20 mins if the engine is switched of during a DPF regen as its gets Red Hot to burn out the clogging and turn it to ash.

A few years.
Disconnect the fan, will be a simple plug on/near the fan shroud. Suspect the sender unit on the engine is dying as stated above. Maybe worth getting a mobile mechanic to do a service, and check the fan out.

That looks like the washer reservior switch to me, keep looking, trace the wires out of the fan itself then if you can follow them back to the thermistor that should be on or near the radiator.
Its probably some damp has got in over winter, corroded contacts maybe, but the fan will stop when you have located the correct plug and pulled it off.
good luck.

Thought I was experiencing the blue screen of death but it turned out it was the first sunny day this year and it was only the sky! Phew. 😄

Unfortunately TinaL it only lasted an hour or so 🙁
So battery terminal removed again...now awaiting a friend to disconnect the fan. 👍

Lucky one I would guess its either dampness got into the wiring/thermistor switch kaput, or mice have been in there having a chew.
Hope your mate finds the problem for you. (y)
