we have a fiat ducato maxi 1983 (a reg) 2.5l diesel motorhome.

the engine mounts have snapped, theres a crack in a housing (whatever that is)

and the starter motor is dodgy (you have to rock the van to start it cold )
my questions are :
A)would it be cheaper to buy a replacement engine (secondhand) ? if i can find one which so far i can't
B) can i replace it with a diesel turbo without replacing gearbox & other things
C) set fire to it :ROFLMAO:(only joking at the moment)
thanks, any tips or info would be great

Surley you just need new engine mounts and a starter and all will be well, bit drastic changing the engine and unless you bought the whole lot chances are it wouldn't come with the starter? Or is this a you/your garage/mechanic can't find the parts?

You can just say "housing". It could be a 10p thermostat housing. Find out.

Starter - under a hundred for a recon at a guess, but if the ring gear has gone as well then it's pricey - again find out.

I thought you had found a replacement - or was that new ?

We can't give you advice if you don't supply the right informations.

mmmmmm.... well a bit of both really, there a few small oil leaks,to get to the the cracked housing the gearbox has to come out and just thought by the time in labour to fix all these things & sourse starter etc it may work out cheaper just to fit a new engine ::bigsmile:

 I cannot see any reason why a Turbo motor could not be fitted. :winky:

It's fine picking our brains but give us some clues.

A thermostat housing is aluminium and the size of a chip shop pudding tin and costs about as much.

Give us the fact maam, just the facts.**

Worst case could be the second hand engine comes without a starter and almost certainly without engine mounts.

Hey do forgive us for not realising RALPH MAN is a woman, must pay attention and read more into things, hee hee
From the sounds of it you have all the symptoms of reverse judder. How old is the van/engine. I would go back to the manufacturers as unfit for purpose, whatever the age anyway.

Hey do forgive us for not realising RALPH MAN is a woman,

Maybe it's RalphMan when it suits her and "I'm a poor little gurly whirly" when she needs help ?

Who knows, damn confusing, these things without willies.

just dawned on me from your other post.......a used replacement engine wont come with the bell housing.
its part of the gearbox....seperate casing but a part of it nonetheless.

brian it's a bell housing ::bigsmile:

Ding Dong - You got there

I do not know what that is like on your Fiat - it's basically a big mounting bracket between the engine and gearbox. On it's own not worth a lot, get ringing and see if you can find one.
