Home Secretary Priti Patel said Monday that her department will pass legislation to introduce a new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) that she argued will help the government track with more accuracy the number of people entering and leaving the U.K. It will apply to visitors without a visa or immigration status, except British and Irish citizens.

Delivering a speech on the government’s new immigration plan, Patel pointed out that many other countries already have systems like the ETA, but declined to clarify how much it would cost visitors.

Bt for us non -resident brits it is a win-win. Not needed entering the UK as a Brit citizen & not required entering the EU as a permanent resident that's 8p saved

Interesting point, how do migrants apply for one to enter the EU ? Especially as the documents are to provide additional security measures for anyone entering the EU. Will it become a serious offence to enter the EU illegally without compliance with the scheme? So serious that it is enforced at every opportunity? Will each country actually check, enforce and deport everyone who doesn't comply? I suspect not, therefore you can question it's validity as a tool against terrorism. The US and especially Australia have a better chance of the scheme working, but the EU ...??

i think it's purely to assist at Border Control for bona fide travellers and if it genuinely speeds checks etc at the border then it's prob not such a bad thing, all the other stuff being spouted is just rhetoric.

i also think it's another tick in the box for the EU Commission to show how important and necessary they are for all those throwing stones at their windows, it won't stop a few windows breaking though ....
