Summer 2015 in the school holidays we are planning as a family to holiday in the Vendee, France. We'll be taking the MH to escape when required and the rest will hire either mobile homes or small chalets. We'd like to be within walking distance of the beach but not on a massive noisy site where we can have an emplacement for the MH and facilities for the rest. Any ideas?

Aire at Jard-sur-mer overlooks the beach. Steps down from the Aire. You can also walk along the beach to the little town. Lots for the kids. Think you can only stay 48 hrs on Aire tho. Lots of sites in the area, some very reasonably priced. If you wanted to stay in the area there's a tourist Office in the town, walking distance of the Aire.

I also stayed at a site inland called L'Hermitage. http://www.campinglhermitage.com. Found it friendly, great pool for the kids and the local leisure centre is across the road should it rain and you want to use an indoor pool.
Very much a family site, but not commercial.

Camping aux coeurs vendeens between st jean de monts and notre dam de monts was very nice. Tiny bar, takeaway in season, indoor and outdoor pools, 15 minute walk to a lovely sandy beach. Shower blocks spotless. No entertainment. In the ACSI book for those of us not tied to peak hols. Easy cycle rides in both directions either on cycle path or on a quiet road parallel to main road. Super u in both above places and also a summer supermarket in a big wooden building only 5 minute walk away, prices not too bad.

Wherever you stay, try to find some time for a visit to the Puy du Fou. It's a great family venue.
There's an aire if you visit in the MH.

When we used to holiday in France camping, trailer tenting and caravanning we used to stay a lot in the Charente Maritime area near to La Palmyre.

This area is immediately south of the Vendee.

Here you can find the first of the real surfing beaches in France on what is known as the Cote Sauvage which is a forested area with a camping site by the lighthouse known as La Coubre. The beach is mixed in that nudists use it but you don't have to bare everything. The surf can be pretty fierce but is ideal for both body boarding and proper surf boards.

Good places to visit locally are Royan on the northern side of the Gironde estuary, Cognac, Isle de Re, Isle D'Oleron and local towns and villages.

Thanks all for the suggestions. Puy du Fou is fantastic went there a few years ago. Our grandchildren are a little young at the moment. We've caravaned and MH in the Vendee for years but haven't ever looked at the Chalet/Mobil Home situation.

http://www.campinglesdunes.fr/ at Brem-sur-mer is very close to a patrolled surfing beach and has Mobil homes and camping pitches.

A bit further north at Saint Gilles Croix de Vie is a big flat beach where they've held the national longboarding championships, although the campsites are set a little way back across the dunes. We went to Camping Les Cypres a few years ago but the sea went flat so no longboarding for me.
