FYI, we woke up this morning in the free car park outside of the château in Falaise to see 2 camels and a zebra having a munch on the grass next to the car park. So far the circus has not encroached on the main parking area, but you may want a plan B if you’re heading that way.

Similar, we once went to bed parked up in the aire next to the stadium in Narbonne. Woke up to a full circus tent, elephants and a myriad of other animals on the exhibition centre across the road.

It's happened to me as well.

Approaching the bastide of Villeneuve there were numerous brightly coloured posters stuck on walls and trees heralding the imminent arrival of ‘Cirque Anzani’ and starring the ‘Incredible Anzani!’ who duly arrived in the form of two beaten up Transit vans with trailers shortly after I had parked for the night in the shade of a tree near the boules pitches. The ‘Incredible Anzani’ (and close-up the disappointingly less incredible Mrs Anzani) and their five children then proceeded to erect the 40 seat canvas Big Top and unload two ponies, a dog, two geese, a monkey and a llama. A café owner was setting up tables, benches, a large T.V. and a bar in the medieval square in readiness for viewing France’s World Cup match. The ‘Incredible Anzani’s’ performance was poorly attended and I noticed nothing incredible about him as we exchanged pleasantries shoulder to shoulder in the pissoir that evening. I slept little that night thanks to their insomniac and flatulent llama which they had tethered to ‘my’ tree.
