Stranger things happen in Switzerland. The Swiss have a habit of doing just what they like.......just because they are Swiss and not much the rest of the world can do about it.

Switzerland’s iconic Lauberhorn ski race has been cancelled because of rising cases of Covid-19, many of them, Swiss health officials say, spread by one British tourist.
The resort of Wengen, where the famous race is held, had recorded no cases of the virus until October, and only ten until mid-December.
After that, cases began to shoot up, and, worryingly, sequencing revealed many of them were the new highly infectious variant first detected in the UK.
Contact tracers found that 27 of the cases alone could be linked to one British tourist who recently stayed in a Wengen hotel.
Wengen desperately tried to save the race, offering to close off the resort to everyone but competitors, and even closing its schools. At first Swiss health officials agreed, but when, at the start of this week yet more Covid-19 cases were recorded, they pulled the emergency break.
Wengen is devastated. The Lauberhorn is not just any race, but one of the top competitions on the Ski World Cup circuit. It is dearly loved by the Swiss, who have watched with delight as some of their own home-grown talent - such as Beat Feuz and Carlo Janka - triumphed there.

British tourist? Surely not?

Wouldn't surprise me if this was true.
It was only back in March when a german bar worker in Ichgl was the source of the pandemic that swept through Austria and into Northerm Italy.

If they're daft enough to open to tourism it's surely only a matter of time until it's starting to spread . The only way of trying to keep the professional race on would have been to close all the resort's to tourists.

Some of those leaving might have finished their holiday as planned to return home for Christmas. Others may have been staying further down the hill - there are a lot of chalets below the village and also some may have left by the gondola that goes right down to La Chable(?) and the railway station, around which there is a hamlet.

I once broke a business trip back from Greece or somewhere for a w/e skiing in Verbier. To get there from the airport the Swiss Tourist office in London gave me an itinerary which involved 2 train changes - 2 mins wait and just across the same platform, an arrival at that station at 0746 and the gondols up at 0752 precisely. Well the Swiss do make clocks to work;)(y)
