It should only smooth out the bumps without affecting the pressure, the flow/pressure should be more constant so that might be what gives you the impression.

It is what is called an "accumulator", which pre pressurises the water to stop the constant cycling of the pump. It won't affect the flow/pressure as stated, but it will stop the squirting effect of the water flow

many many years! since I was a kid
given the scale in your kettle, descale the shower head too. warm water and vinegar in a container and take the shower head off and submerse in the liquid for a few hours. works wonders on restoring flow

you might also whilst your at it, descale the water heater, the same way you do the kettle using 5ltrs of white vinegar in about 10ltrs of water. draw it through the boiler so you smell and taste vinegar at the hot tap. then run the water heater for a few hours before flushing into the waste tank. cleans the whole system

ok thanks , then its working as intended as the pump no longer cycles like it used to. :)

By experimentation I've found the accumulator pressure set slightly below the system pressure works best (well it does on my system).

In the ‘early days’ accumulators had no bladder. The pressure was established by the pump squeezing the air trapped inside the accumulator, which then acted as a buffer to reduce cycling. The problem with those was that some of the air would escape and reduce the effectiveness, so you had to empty them out from time to time. I assume that the bladder was introduced to prevent the air escaping.

If you pump them up too hard, you will have a ‘solid block’ of air that the pump is unable to compress and no improvement at all. On the other hand, you must put some air in or there will nothing to buffer the pump. I reckon that the pressure does not need to be very high at all. It must be less than what the pump achieves but only needs to be high enough for the bladder to fill the vessel when the water side is not under pressure (pump off and a tap open) for best effect.

Don’t they come with instructions?

Once the water system is up to pressure the air side of the accumulator will assume the same pressure as the water so by starting with an initial air pressure you are actually just setting the volume of air in the accumulator that is available to act as a shock absorber, as said above too much or too little and it will not work.

Just bought an accumulator. Our shurflo pump is 30psi. The accumulator is pre set at 10psi, is that enough? What are the collectives thoughts?

Just refitted the bladder in mine and if memory serves me correct the new units come set at 13psi but you have to set pressure to what ever pressure your pump delivers.

Left it on 10psi an it's working spot on.

The pump's cut out is 30psi but don't know the cut in pressure 🤔 maybe it's 10psi 🤔
