Will be using tunnel in August however due to work commitments will not be setting of till 6pm and its a 5 hr drive. Rather than taking the 2320 train assume i nake it on time or the 123am and stopping at cite de Europe would prefer to stop over UK side and travel in morning.
Was thinking Canterbury P&R however understand height barriers in operation after 8pm.
If memory serves correctly you have to check in at tunnel before using car park.
If book ticket for say 6am or 7am departure instead will they let me in early or tell me to take next train
Other option is to find a stop over enroute instead and depending on stopover distance from tunnel take slightly later morning train ie 8am or 9am.
Although other option maybe just to forget Fri eve set of Sat am take us time and get an afternoon crossing and stop at cite de Europe.

Hoping someone can assist / clarify.

You can't enter Canterbury P&R after 8pm

You're correct that you can't get into the tunnel complex without checking in and they won't let you check in until 2 hours before the train you are taking because they simply don't have the space for people to be hanging around for hours.

If you turn up earlier than 2 hours you will be offered the next available train and if there is a difference in cost between that one and the one you book then you will need to pay it. If you don't want to pay the difference you will have to go away and come back 2 hours before your booked time.

There are a few lay-bys and things within 20 minutes or so or if you prefer you can stay at the motorway services at the junction before although you will have to pay.

Our record is turning up 14 hours early at Folkestone (cock up by me. I forgot about Canterbury not letting you in after 8 ) We just paid what they wanted, got on the first available train, nipped round the corner to the old Calais aire (RIP) and slept there.

since 2014, before that 20 years of boating & caravanning
Another vote for getting on the train as soon as you can, then getting your head down at Cite de Europe, a few hours sleep, a quick shop (Carrefour and Lidl) The motorhome parking area is next to the police station & feels safe

Cross, sleep, walk across road to Carrefour, load, go.
I think 5 hours Halifax to Folkestone could be optimistic on a Friday evening in August

Thanks guys
Just found this on their website. Might as well plan evening train as if do miss it by less than 2 hrs no issues. And can still travel up to 24 hrs after booking.

What happens if I arrive early or late?

If you check-in within 2 hours either side of your reserved time, within the validity of your ticket you may be offered a space on the next departure with availability without charge.

If you check-in more than 2 hours but no more than 24 hours before or after your reserved time, your booking may be exchanged, subject to availability and payment of the difference between the price you paid and the price applicable to the departure for which your booking is exchanged.

If you arrive more than 24 hours after your booked departure time, your booking will be invalid and cannot be exchanged

@Jagtazman One other thing. If you turn up early and the next available trains they offer you are the same price or cheaper than the one you're booked on you won't be charged anything.

They usually offer you the next three available trains.

On 3rd van so not a total newbie....
We have stayed at cite europe several times now, initially concerned, but actually it is probably one of the safest aires there are always quite a few vans there, it overlooks the check in area but is quiet, at least you then know when you leave in the morning within 2 minutes you are straight onto nice clear roads.

We stayed at cite de Europe last year no issues tbh. Was concerned about making late train but looks like even if miss it will be okay so no issues

Full Time 2011-2013, now part timers!
Stayed on Cite Europe again last Tuesday on the way home. As usual it felt safe & was very quiet. Up next morning, breakfast & straight onto train to come home.

Definitely cross, then to Cité Europe, Carrefour across the road, Lidl just up the road, Carrefour petrol station with aire nearby for dumping before you hit the road in the morning, if you don't need fuel drive straight through the 24hr pump area to get to the aire.
Cheers

Stopped at Cite Europe three weeks ago on route back. Price of fuel worked out about 2p a litre cheaper then Tesco, What has this world come to?

No problems overnighting , No clandestine's about although it was bleak and horrible weather.
