I may purchase some ciggies when coming back through this way in a couple of weeks but I also may go through Luxembourg.

Luxembourg normally works out at £4.00 a pack or 44 euros for 200.
I was pleasantly surprised, or my mate was, that duty free in Geneva, it worked out to £37.50 for 200.

When i have gone through the tunnel before I thought i saw them at 80+ euros, now i am wondering if that was for 400.

If somebody knows or if somebody is passing could you just let me know as to whether to purchase in Europe or Duty free tunnel as the best bargain.

The 'duty free' at the tunnel is actually French duty paid. Duty free stopped when we joined the eu. Cheapest place I found when I still smoked was Adinkerke (Belgium) where there is a number of shops selling only tobacco, alcohol, chocolate and porn specifically for the British market.

Tbf, the cheapest country in Europe I found was Belgium but Hungary was cheaper still and Bulgaria and although they're in Europe, I meant more accessible

I don’t smoke but we often bring tobacco back for someone cheapest place so far has been Gibraltar with Luxembourg a close second. Think the Channel Ferry prices are about double Luxembourg and I’d guess Eurotunnel are about the same. Looking at their online Reserve and Collect shop there are no tobacco products and all the spirits look very expensive for duty free prices. Maybe as Reallyretired says French Duty paid?

It’s a EU thing:rolleyes:

They are cheap in the Canary Islands - about €30 for 200 but you can only take 200 back into the UK. Same with all countries outside the EU.

I buy mine in Belgium where they are about €50 for 200, but the price has been steadily rising over the last few years.

Its like the airports "duty free" only really applies to flights heading outside the EU and the lower limits then apply for the amount that can be purchased

Yep, it’s duty paid at Eurotunnel!

Airports don’t help matters when they have companies with names like “World Duty Free”.

A bit like that very clever advertising for Heineken (I think it was) that proudly stated “brewed in the UK by Danes”. Many, I’m sure, thought that we had Danish brewers working in the UK. Not at all, the company was called ‘Danes’!

I would have thought that you would want your payments to go to the UK government. ?

How did this end up as brexit thread ?

Gassing and hitler are sure to follow

Missed the French supermarket on the way to the tunnel so out of desperation, checked the price per bottle of Peroni at the duty free shop, exactly the same price per bottle @ Waitrose!

You’re only allowed to bring 200 cigarettes back from Switzerland not in EU

Gibraltar, like the Canary Islands, isn't part of the EU, so you are restricted in bringing back duty free alcohol and tobacco products from there. I understand that the Spanish customs do search people at the border sometimes.

They are hot on it.Will confiscate all & anything over the 200fags/couple of packets of tobacco limit, seize the vehicle, not good if in a hire car, & I know someone in the UK who then received a further fine of 600€ direct to his home address for the smuggling offence. That's on a bad day.Normally they just seize all the goods. Best to be walking

Yay for Brexit - will the booze cruise make a reappearance - will duty free become a thing - vote Boris
:party2:
No it will kill the booze cruise market as you’ll be only able to bring in the following
Alcohol allowance
Alcohol limits depend on the type of drink you want to bring in to the UK:
Type of alcoholAmount
Beer16 litres
Wine (not sparkling)4 litres
You can also bring in either:
Type of alcoholAmount
Spirits/other liquors over 22% alcohol1 litre
Fortified wine/sparkling wine/alcoholic drinks up to 22% alcohol2 litres
You’re allowed to split this allowance, for example: 1 litre of fortified wine and half a litre of spirits.
Tobacco allowance:
For your tobacco allowance, you can bring in one of the following:
Type of tobaccoAmount
Cigarettes200
Cigarillos100
Cigars50
Tobacco250g

The booze cruise is alive and well at the moment I have a friend who goes with his son twice a year to load up on wine with no real limit. How can going back to 4 litres be an improvement?.

Because the real saving for the majority of travellers and the biggest smuggling head ache for the UK government was always spirits and tobacco

But there's no longer any worthwhile saving to be made

Depends whether you smoke and drink spirits! How can it be an improvement going back to lower limits for fags and spirits anyway (and not to mention it possibly being harder to import motorhomes after all who knows what will happen with european type approval maybe there has been an announcement I've not heard).
Presumably the logical reasoning is if its good to reduce the limit of imports free of tax from the EU it would be even better to abolish duty free altogether but seem a bonkers thing to think its a good idea to me.

Really!!.......show me anywhere in the UK that you can buy reasonable wine for the equivalent of £2 a bottle and tobacco for around half the price.

Duty on still wine in the UK £2.28 if less than 15% alcohol then VAT on top in France 3 euro cents!!!. To me thats a worthwhile saving If it isn't for you can you advise me on lottery numbers!

I think its an excellent idea more money for the UK tax man and bigger discount for the occasional traveller. I would argue half price tobacco is a bad idea for the nations health and the NHS

Yes of course there might be health benefits in restricting the tax free allowance but the discussion was about whether there was a benefit for consumers in going back to the old duty free limits. I think anyone who wants to go back to getting 3euro cents a bottle of in exchnge for losing over £2 plus a bottle on the rest is bonkers or just clutching at straws to find something good about a certain political decision that cannot be named.

I don't drink more wine than would be allowed under the old duty free rules. If you chose too I think you should pay uk duty on it as you soon will have too :D

Not disputing or argueing the rights and wrongs of the situation just the prices, you stated "But there's no longer any worthwhile saving to be made "

The beer in Carrfour cite Europe is often more than Tesco at home

Tobacco and spirits are hardly worth the bother at French duty prices. Ferry duty free shops are deserted compared to years ago when they were Duty Free. This is why the services in Luxembourg are so busy Beer in Carrfour cite Europe is more expensive than Tesco in the UK
