Hi - we are considering taking a year out to travel around europe in a motorhome

Can anyone advise on best way to do this

Should we buy in UK and sell when we return or go abroad to purchase

How difficult is it to insure and cross borders to non EU countries

Any other problems we may hit upon

It may look a little intimidating at this stage but once you're underway it will all fall into place and become a wonderful adventure. We set off with our RV towing a car and no prior experience whatsoever.

There probably isn't any problem going to any country in Europe even Albania - check out this website for Barry and Margaret Williamson's travels fulltime across all of Europe and information from lots of their friends and other travellers. Probably has all you need. MagBaz Travels

As to what and where to purchase - isn't critical. However, do you want a Left-Hand or Right Hand Drive. Might you find one easier? Our RV was LHD the car we towed RHD now we have a RHD van and tour for 6-7 months at a time - never had a preference.

You can do it in any van but might consider that a European van would be preferable to a British built van so that spares and agents are more likely to be found. On this basis a German built van would be best. On the same basis a Mercedes based van might serve you better than others.


At one time it was better to buy in Germany but the rise of the euro has made prices very similar. If you do want to have a look try here - one of the biggest sales sites

hello ,all i can say is DO IT.remember the seasons north in summer south in winter . sure to have fun. avoid campsites unless in luxembourg . every where else i found wild camping ok. the less you spend the longer youcan travel . get good maps. look for local maps like our ord survey if you like an area. dont be in a rush ,its an adventure playground out there for adults. 1 year is not enough. its life changing. cheers alan.
