This is a cheeky one as a group of us are planning a motorcycle tour in May. We are fully jabbed.

I think the entry requirements via Eurotunnel are clear as are those coming back but what about within the EU area? We are looking at France, up to Belgium, over to Germany, into Switzerland and Austria and then back.

Are border checks carried out France/Belgium/Germany/Austria borders? Any added checks if UK reg bikes?

Anyone travelled from EU into Switzerland? What checks?

I have looked at many websites for these countries but it does seem to be a real minefield. Anyone who has crossed any of these borders may be able to help me shortcut the process.

Thanks

Oh this thread will be followed it sounds a fantastic trip....... like a dream I have that never comes reality!

Your only issues will be those involving Swtizerland where you can time a break in order to get your vignette as CH and AU require them.
The rest of them you wont even notice, on the presumption that Covid doesnt force reactions.

Have a great trip

Did Switzerland a few years ago on bikes. Vignette over £30 and we were only there for 24 hrs.

I’ve toured many parts of Europe on motorcycle’s and avoided Switzerland because of that. There were usually 12 of us and it would add up to a large amount for such a small amount of time.

Yep, why go to Switzerland on a motorbike and risk a massive speeding fine……loads of great roads elsewhere😂

The Austrian one can be bought on line before hand or at most petrol stations in Germany on the way to the border.
Have fun and any room for one more😂😂😂😂😂😂

I know. I'm not organising though. Might press him to avoid.
This would help.
I ve posted it before, and i ll post it again
16 minutes of pure balcony roads with many near to each other (Vercors) may be an option preferable to CH

We were heading for Austria and North Italy 2 years ago when all this covid shit started , needless to say we never got there.

Is a vignette now compulsory in Switzerland for a motorcycle? I thought it was only if you wanted to use their motorways and some other major roads?

Summer of 2019 myself and a friend took a road trip from Le Havre to Mandello del Lario (Lake Como) and return completely away from motorways and didn’t purchase any vignettes for Austria or Switzerland.

Route down took in Verdun, Friedrichshafen (Zeppelins), Bregenz, traverse Switzerland and over the Julier Pass into Italy. Coming back zigzagged through Switzerland via Lugano, Locarno, the Simplon Pass and on to Chamonix before meandering back up to the ferry.

Might have to avoid major roads and motorways. Slower but more scenery and cheaper!

And very enjoyable with plenty of off the beaten track inns and auberges that really make you welcome.

At the right time of the year Bregenz on Lake Constance/Bodensee hosts an outdoor opera with the set actually on the lake - even for non-opera lovers it’s a spectacular experience:

The complete performance of Verdi’s Rigoletto can be viewed on Sky Arts via NOWTV.

I think that is Austria. Swiss ones are CHF 40. £32

So, other than England/France borders it looks like all other are covered by our NHS passes? No need for tests in any border crossings?

Recommend Friedrichshafen as well then for the Zeppelin Museum. Hard to describe the scale of them but the partial recreations on display do a good job. Check opening times though.

The only evidence of any border/customs post activity I’ve seen anywhere in recent eurorambles was on the run up to the Simplon Pass on the Italian side. Looked like a couple of trucks had been pulled for some reason - cigarettes etc.?

Suppose there might always be the chance of a ‘pop-up’ border monitoring station anywhere in the Eurozone now that Macron and others are getting a bit twitchy about illegal internal immigration as elections approach, but haven’t heard about anything as yet.

I went to France and Belgium on my motorbike in Oct 21, only had to show Covid pass at the tunnel on the way out and when I wanted to get into cafes in France. Nothing at the border, just straight across.

Stay off the motorway and no vignette required. Also motorways are a bit dull on a bike.

Hi David
If you get into Austria, go and have a stay with Denise & Ali @ Pensionhausmaria
Ali will fill you in with all current regulations for a European trip. He’s a biker and will happily show you around all the famous passes. (Any excuse)
Have a read on trip advisor for their reviews. We have been there many times on bike & car.

Thanks Jackd

Likewise, if in Belgium these guys are petrol heads. Neil does track days at the Nurburgring. Very close to Spa.

I can recommend the biker B&B Les Ballastieres, 40 miles SSE of Calais.
Keen and relaxed (English) biker owners , undercover parking and workshop facilities.
A few of us had a long weekend there. 10 min riverside walk to village restos and bars.

It was so hot that we had to drink beer in the shade.
