Hi folks just wondering if anyone has experience with european insurance for MH over 3500kg? My wagon is 4000KG and most of the usual suspects (AA, RAC etc) are quite reluctant to quote me for it, (or even accept it) thanks in advance,,, Paul(y)

I've just insured with Comfort for first time including European recovery. Good quote. Simple online form, also worth phoning, i believe a lot of users here are with them, RH is 6T

I've never come across an insurance company who even ask for the vehicle weight never mind differentiate based on it.

Reading your post do you perhaps mean breakdown cover as opposed to insurance?

If so you still won't have a problem. The specialist motorhome insurers almost all provide breakdown cover as part of their package.

A lot of people use ADAC which is the German version of the AA.

The usual suspects as you put it, the AA, RAC, Green Flag etc all do cover vehicles over 3500kg. You just have to know what you're asking for and ask in the right place. If you've been speaking to the minimum wage monkeys in the call centres then it's no wonder you aren't getting very far

Even ADAC don't cover vans over 3.2 metres high for recovery, or that's according to the small print what happens in reality I don't know.

We have ADAC cover and also cover via our SAGA insurance policy so hopefully one of them would come up trumps if we needed.

I've not got any personal experience of ADAC but a lot of people seem to swear by them.

When we were in Italy last year there was some huge old Yank thing on the next pitch. For whatever reason, don't know why, they needed a call out and the ADAC guy turned up in a little panel van. He was there for a long time, 2 or 3 hours, but he got them fixed and on their way eventually,

I opened a Nationwide FlexPlus account, initially to get advantageous credit and debit card usage abroad, and some interest on balance up to £2500.
The added bonus of the included comprehensive, weight/length unlimited* European breakdown had a little to do with it :)

*I think the limit is 7500kg, length ?

I am insured with AIB and have UK and European breakdown and recovery including repatriation. All this for just less than £250:00. So my advice would be ask your insurance company before trying elsewhere.

Many thanks for all the replies and yes sorry i should have said Breakdown cover as opposed to insurance, but like a lot of folk my previous van was 3.5 ton and everything was included with my annual insurance premium, its only as the weight went up so seemed the criteria for breakdown cover... but il will try some of the above mentioned options, thanks again :)

I insure with Comfort on MH at 4200kg, I queried that some companies don't cover over 3500kg, I was told that " if we insure it, we cover it".

More than toes wet now!
Just signed up with ADAC but haven't needed them as yet (well not until tomorrow now!).
€88 and covers the following -
Motorhomes shall be covered regardless of vehicle measurements. The following benefits shall not be available, if the vehicle exceeds a total width of 2.55m, length of 10m, height of 3.20m (load included) and gross weight of 7,500kg: Off-road recovery (§16), vehicle recovery (§20), pick-up service (§21) and if the car is a total loss, transport from the place of the incident to the storage site and from the storage site to the scrapyard or customs office (§23 No. 2).

You're right in that some breakdown companies don't cover MH's over a certain weight or length if you go directly to them for a quote.
I struggled with RAC with this.
But yet go through the camping & caravan club who will provide cover, and they use the RAC!
Green flag were the same.
But I got cover via the caravan club (now C&MC) and they use Green Flag!

My cover with the CC/C&MC is on a personal policy, covering any vehicle that I am driving and this includes my car, wife's car and the motorhome - no age, weight or length restrictions. But, it only covers the UK.
To add overseas is expensive.(red pennant)

I therefore insure with comfort who offer an add-on breakdown cover for a small supplement and this provides cover on the MH for both UK and Europe.
Comfort wouldn't sell the breakdown cover separately though. I had to buy insurance with them.
I tried AA, RAC, Green Flag, Britannia, GEM and ADAC. Didn't fancy ADAC but others like them on here.
These were only my experiences.

Maximum length was the issue for me, it is 8.5m so RAC renewed.

Got sorted with Guardian in the end £140 for 12 months full UK and European cover, (Weight unlimited and up to 12M in length) Was toying with the idea of ADAC (the German AA) apparently but got frustrated with having to call Germany then the application form seemed to suggest must be resident of Germany etc, although the price was around Euro 110 and i know others have done it with great success but i thought for the sake of 40 quid keep it simple with a UK company :)

We used Safeguard for our 7000kg RVs as part of a complete cover, I don't believe they offer rescue separately and still insure with them on Hymer.

  • Caravans and trailers - 8 metres in length (including A-frame).

  • - Motorhomes - 8 metres in length or 7.5 tonnes in weight.

RAC have a commercial branch they use for larger motorhomes in theory they send a van if you can't be fixed they farm it out to a local company

And then along comes someone to change a wheel who did not have a torque wrench.

And afterwards the fight with the RAC started. :sneaky:

Joe

Weren't funny after having waited nearly an hour and then had to wait another hour for someone else to show up. Got it sorted eventually but hope nothing like it happens again!
