EU finalises deal spelling death of diesel and petrol cars

Yes, they mention the 'Havana' effect.

They will need some huge cables from the hundreds of Chinese coal fired power stations to keep all the new cars charged up.
No alternative clean fuels allowed. Absolute total madness.

Interesting this will help the smaller producers A dispute around the so-called “Ferrari clause” for niche carmakers was also settled on Thursday evening. Under the deal, lawmakers decided that manufacturers that produce up to 10,000 cars and 22,000 vans per year will be granted an exemption from the interim target. They will however still be required to reach the zero-emission objective by the end of 2035.

Yep watch all the classics hit the road.

I've already got a 33 year old van sat there with the aim to replace my current one . Historic vehicle status by 2030 , tax ,Mot and ulez etc exempt

It's the only way around their madness

Combustion engines aren't the problem, it's the draconian fuels they run on. There are drop in alternatives readily available which when used with the appropriate filter are carbon neutral or net zero - they only consume the natural carbon in the atmosphere around them.
The new synthetic fuel which will be used in F1 from 2026 will also be net zero... unlike battery manufacture which produces a huge amount of emissions and is very costly to recycle.

You can buy HVO at the pump in Finland today.

Everyone knows that even by 2045 2/3 of all road vehicles will still be running on an internal combustion engine.

Even now with the large variety of electric vehicles available they only amount to 1% of the total around the globe.

I wonder what their definition of a van is?

No mention of HGV s and buses/coaches, tractors, motorcycles, off highway equipment......
And there in lies the problem, they continue to talk about cars and switching to public transport.
But you only have to spend an hour on any motorway to see the size of the truck problem.
Which IMHO is a bigger problem than the family cars.

Looks like cars are 60% of the emissions for road going vehicles on this. So still a majority, but still a big chunk missing.
Another reason to try and get more freight moving about on rail imo.

I wonder how that is calculated, trucks generally pollute more than cars and spend significantly more time on the roads.
If it’s just by total numbers of each type of vehicle then it’s probably questionable.
However, my point is not going to change anything so I guess accurate or not it will not change the policies are made.

Yeah, no idea, just what I found. Cars outnumber them vastly, but as you say, are used for less hours per day.

By then they will probably bring out a law saying all vehicles over fifteen years old have to be scrapped, it’s got nothing to do with the environment but everything to do with control and making money.

I don't see it as surprising and most developed countries are probably going on a similar timescale. I wonder if the present increase in EVs continues if we could be close to that anyway as the production of EVs increases and ice reduces there's likely to be a big change in the price difference

And how long before electric cars and vans are hit with a road (RFL) tax? Some reports I’ve read indicate no longer than 2-3 years before the chancellor wants a slice of the action.

They can’t afford to lose all the revenues they make from vehicles currently so ev’s will be heavily taxed for fuel and just for being on the road.

But it’s the EU where the manufactures are based, I can’t think of a U.K. owned based manufacturer
The ban comes in the UK, already announced, whether the EU bans them or not, that's my point.
