Hi, we have a bit of a situation and we could do with some advice.

We haven't been into the EU with the van since lockdown and a few problems are presenting themselves for our trip in May. We have a different insurance including breakdown for the van than we had in 2020. We wanted to add EU breakdown to our policy for the 64 day drip, we were told we could add it for £50, we thought that was ok but when we phoned the insurance company to add it they told us it only covered 30 days and we could not extend it (they suggested we come back and then go out again to restart the cover!!!!).
We talked about the fact the insurance part of the policy stated we could travel in the EU for up to 90 days so we queried the fact the attached breakdown only runs for 30 days but we got no change from them "that's just how it is"!!
We now find out that the fully comp cover only extends to 30 days when travelling in the EU and the remaining 34 days will only be covered minimum EU cover i.e. third party, and guess what, we cannot extend the fully comp to cover those 34 days!!
We are stuck with this insurance until just after we return from out trip in July.

Has anyone come across this situation and if so how did you get around it, we seem to be stuck with the insurance for now but we do need to at least get breakdown cover for the whole trip, we will probably go to Green flag (extra £££) who we had before lockdown as they supplied us with a great service the year we broke down in Portugal (2019), but not sure what to do about the lack of fully comp cover. Gerrrrr!!

Travel insurance, that's a whole different story...........................how bl***y much! we are 69 and 70 years old, one of us with high blood pressure otherwise fairly fit but going by some of the EU travel insurance companies we are old relics that deserve to pay a small fortune for cover which mostly doesn't apply to two adults travelling in a 6mt PCV.

Why not cancel current policy, claim back 3 moths premium and start a new policy that suits?
Have now tried that, trouble is after the insurance company and the broker have taken their cancelation fees I get £7 back, it's a big loss for me. Having thought about this a bit more we are going to let the current insurance run until July (take the chance of second part of trip being third part only), take out new breakdown cover from Green flag or similar (so we can get home in case of an accident) and find a better policy when we return. Having now checked my other insurance policies it turns out that we have been traveling in the EU on basic third party for years also known as minimum European cover. Quite shocking really as we have toured Europe for the last 20+ years in our classic car without even thinking of the consequences of such basic cover, our fault of course for reading the small print ;-(

Sounds like you need a new insurance broker as well …or better still, maybe do it yourself !

I think you are right, I have blindly stayed with this company for many years thinking they were looking after me!!
