How about this ???

Thanks Sharon....here's a better idea......if any member is planning on going abroad & wouldn't mind escorting a slightly nervous newcomer, they could post a thread here, eh ???

Gordon & I are planning on leaving the UK in early October, travelling through France (exact route as yet unplanned !) & then we will be going to Morocco for at least 3 months, maybe even 6 months, starting in November........Never been but want to go......come with us !! We love Morocco & have been every year for the last 3 years...By the way....did you see Rick Stein in Morocco on the TV last night ?? Great program....lovely grub !!

Anyway....back to skulking.....Jenny

Hi Jenny

May I suggest you put the above post as a thread in the meets section? Sounds fantastic, and might coincide with someone else's plans to travel....

As for Rick Stein, love him, but then I love cooking - wish I had his adventurous spirit with fish though!!

Hi Jenny

Morocco is indeed a fabulous country, we spent a month there in Jan/Feb this year and plan to go with a group next year.
As I understand it, you can only stay for a maximum of three months, do you plan to go back to Spanish territory to renew your visa ?

Maroc

Hiya Jim
The plan is to extend our visa whilst there. We checked to see if we could apply for a longer stay than 3 months initially but are advised by the Moroccan Embassy that a "simple" visit to the local police station will see the application done in no time....this is, however, contrary to what we had heard.....everything takes Bl.....ming ages in Morocco(& we are not fluid in French either !). The very big site at Agadir, Atlantica Parc was helping people with their extended stay requests last year so this is where we will be heading for help.I'm sure they will expect us to stay on the site for at least a month (in order to get something back !) but as Gordon loves the sea, & this site is very close to the beach...within walking distance....then we will sit there quite happily.
We have always gone from February-April on previous visits so are not sure what the weather will be like over Christmas....anyway we will enjoy ourselves, we always do !!

Hi Jenny

I've not been on that site, but it looks good for a long chill out, I also heard from a German motorhomer that they will help with extended visas but not confirmed..

Happy and safe travels

Hi,

How do you get on with Insurances when in Morocco e.g. Motorhome, Breakdown , and Medical Insurances as we are thinking of going and would be interested in who can provide the insurance cover. We currently insure all of the above with Safeguard but I don't think they automatically cover Morocco ?

Thanks

Brian

Hi Brian,

Safeguard cover Morocco but only issue a Green Card for 90 days, they will how ever issue you another Green Card for another 90 days if you extend your visa.

Comfort will issue you a Green Card for Morocco for 120 days. If you have their RAC breakdown cover with your policy this is also extended to Morocco when a Green Card is issued. We also have our travel/medical/house insurance in one combined policy with Comfort.

I think the Caravan Club also cover Morocco.

It's 6 years since we were last in Morocco, we love the place but it was slowly getting overwhelmed by motorhomes and motorhome tours. We moved on to pastures new for our winter trips.

Hi Don

While Morocco has undoubtedly become more popular with motorhhomers I would hardly say it is overwhelmed, it's busy on the coast near the tourist towns but certainly not when you go inland and further South.
We travelled for hour upon hour, sometimes days without seeing another motorhome, and little other traffic apart from donkeys and carts.
We love the place too, stay well clear of the big coastal sites and all the other tourist hot spots, the 'hidden' Morocco is fantastic, the people warm and friendly and the only place I've wild camped and felt safe...

Safe travels

Hi Jim,

May be "overwhelmed" was exaggerating a little bit.::bigsmile:

I agree with you entirely about the country but for us it was time to move on.

I'm glad they stopped the wild camping on the beach between Banana village and Taghazoute. In 2001 there were 100's of vans entrenched on the beach frightened to move in case they lost their pitch, I hate to think where they emptied their loos.

As we spent Jan - Mar in Morocco it sometimes got a bit cool in land.

We now winter in Turkey, another safe place to free camp. It's very quiet in the winter at present and I'm hoping it will stay that way for the remaining years we have left to roam in the winter.

Hi Don

Not for long I fear :roflmto: your secret is out .. :winky:

Seriously, would you think that Turkey would be ok for an RV re roads, sites etc.
We have thought about it for maybe winter 2009.

hi Jim,

The roads in Turkey have improved considerably in the last five years and because of the high price (on a par with the UK) of fuel there is very little traffic on them outside the towns and cities.

The main mode of long distance travel is by luxury coach and when I say luxury I mean it, they are on a par with anything I seen world wide. In fact the coach station in Istanbul is the biggest in the world and one of the most modern.

In the past we have travelled as far as the Syrian/Turkish border on the med coast.

Free camping is not a problem, we have only free camped from Jan - April but I don't think there would be a problem other times.

We often stay overnight in the car parks of the smaller ancient sites, they are visited by tourist in the large coaches so it would not be a problem with an ARV. If you arrrive after the afternoon tourist coaches have left and park in a corner you should not have any problems. I would advise you not to try and park overnight at Troy or Ephesus as these sites are guarded by the military.

I don't know how much you know about Turkey but the military (Jandarma) police the rural areas. They also have a traffic divisions as well. The town police (blue uniforms) police the towns and also have a traffic division.

As we spend most of our time in the rural areas we often come across the Jandarma, the rank and file are conscripts and the NCO's and officers are regulars and are conspicuous in their very smart uniforms. A word of warning don't park to close to a Jandarma post or you will be moved on.

Camp sites are another matter, the ones that we use won't accommodate an ARV but if you use the free camping spots on the harbours what we use you should be OK.

One of the musts for Turkey is Cappadocia, the land of underground cities/churches and fairy chimneys. If you base yourself at Goreme (Camping Kaye) you can visit the area with no problems at all. Anywhere the tourist buses get so can you.

This coming winter I'll make some notes and keep a look out for convenient stop overs for an ARV. When we are in the transit mode we overnight at one of the large number of large modern filling stations that every large village and town seem to have.

That would be very much appreciated Don, we know little of Turkey ..

Many thanks
