Hi all,

Apologies for posting here. I wasn’t sure where the correct place was to put it.

We (2 adults and 2 dogs) are travelling to Ireland from the UK on Wednesday (by Stena ferry from Holyhead). I’ve studied the government guidance in Ireland and the UK but feel a bit nervous about getting the requirements right after the last couple of years of constantly shifting guidelines.

My understanding is:-

- No Covid documents/tests/proof of vaccination etc at all are required in either direction.
- Driving licence is ok for I.D. (but we’re taking passports as well as driving licences anyway).
- Outbound into Ireland, the dogs need worming, up to date rabies and AHCs

I’d be grateful for confirmation that all this is correct.

I a;so have a couple of questions:-

1) My passport will expire a little under 4 months from the date we’re back to the UK. I can’t see anything about needing 6 months unexpired (which I know can be required in some places). Is that a requiremt for Ireland?
2) Do we need deworming for the dogs on the way back in as well?

Thanks a lot.

Chris

I think it would be advisable to get a van insurance green card as well (remember them?!) . Double check that if you have a recovery option on the van that it applies outside the UK and mind those roaming charges outside the UK!

The passport should be fine because there is a common travel area for all UK&Irish passport holders which mean a relaxing of certain rules - check what it entails though because there may be some confusion even among the officials.

Apart from that, plain sailing! I'm not sure but with the fall in the €uro, you might find the diesel is good value too!

Can't comment on the dogs sadly as I know nothing!

Ditto for us. Absolutely no documentation worries or inspection when we travelled over and back a month or so ago. No idea about pets but there were plenty on board - Stenaline Fishguard to Rosslare - top tip visit the ‘duty free’ before boarding for £5(ish) per litre London Dry Gin on the way out and buy Jamesons for half U.K. supermarket prices onboard coming back if you are that way inclined. ;)

worming not required for return

Why would the dogs need wormed going from uk to Ireland? Its usually only required for re entering the uk from europe. Ive never had them wormed leaving the uk

Thanks. Good point to check the van insurance requirement. Found this on teh Irish Government website.

Motor Insurance and Green Cards (Proof of insurance)

Drivers from the UK, including Northern Ireland, may now drive in Ireland and elsewhere in the EU, without a Green Card as proof of motor insurance.

Don't know but this is on teh Irish Government website.

Travelling with pets

Rules for pet travel between Ireland and Great Britain have changed.
Each pet travelling, or returning, from Great Britain to Ireland must, in addition to being microchipped and vaccinated against rabies must:
  • Enter through specific Travellers’ Points of Entry: (Dublin Airport, Rosslare Port, Port of Cork at Ringaskiddy, Shannon Airport and Cork Airport, and Dublin Port.);
  • Travel with either a health certificate issued by a UK official vet or an EU pet passport. EU pet passports issued by Northern Ireland will remain valid but an EU pet passport that was issued in GB will not be valid for travel to the EU even it was issued before January 2021
  • Dogs travelling from, or returning from, GB to Ireland will require treatment for tapeworm by a vet 1 to 5 days before arrival in Ireland.

Thats interesting and very strange as worming never required entering any other EU country. Ill be arriving in ireland 15th September but im going cairnryan to belfast.

We were over in May… worming done for outward journey. Nothing needed for return..

if travelling from NI to ROI which I do almost monthly with dog in tow the only thing you need to check is that your UK breakdown cover covers you. So coming in direct from Holyhead same thing. Irish authorities North and South have bigger things to concern themselves about like drugs rather than dogs, sausages, or sausage dogs. Bring an umbrella and raincoat but embrace the wildness! Don't forget to come to NI either! Current diesel price about in ROI about £1.75 after conversion but fill up in major towns.

Just back from 5 weeks in Ireland with 2 dogs in van, Travelled from Cairnryan to Belfast and then across to west coast for the Wild Atlantic way, had all the relevant info for dogs, Rabies AHC our passports but as travelling into Northern Ireland none of these were required. Turned up at port, no checks, and same on return apparently the NI protocol has been put on hold until ratification. Forgot to include umbrella though as its essential!!

Most insurances allow third party cover in most EU countrys without the need of Green Card

When we went in December no documents needed. But police were checking car boots at Dublin on the way back. Think they were looking for Guinness smugglers🇨🇮

roI, Finland, Malta andUk are Tapeworm free. That is why your dog didn’t need it for other EU countries as they have got it already

So if uk is tapeworm free why would you need to worm them going from uk to Ireland?🤷‍♂️ That was my point.

It’s now a 2nd country but it is hard to understand from a practical point of view.
