Since 2019.
Currently in Badajoz, just over the border from Portugal. When we left the campsite this morning the engine on our 2019 Fiat Ducato PVC (2.3L 130 bhp) hesitated slightly and the yellow engine warning light came on together with a couple of beeps and a "check engine" message. The van then ran sluggishly and wouldn't pull as I expected - possibly in limp mode? After a few miles I pulled over and stopped the engine and on restarting it then ran fine for 80 miles to Badajoz with no problems other than the yellow warning light remains on and the "check engine" message appearing.

Should I get it checked out or is likely to be a glitch? I haven't had much joy on Google trying to find somewhere appropriate nearby where I could take the van for someone to find out the exact fault.

I would leave it until you get back but check oil and coolant levels regularly. I've had that light come on and was told it was only advisory. It might be a failed sensor or as you say a glitch and once the fault code is cleared it may disappear.

Check the engine oil and coolant levels as a precaution. Low level of oil triggered this on my old Mk1 Zafira when going up a steep hill in Germany.

I should add that apart from this one occasion in the 130,000 miles i never topped it up as it never used any oil between services.

Agree with above, there are several levels of faults that will light up the engine warning light. If the van is not in limp mode, and the fluids are good, get it checked when you get home....

Or, find a funster near you with Multi ECU...

Cheers

I don’t know whether it was in limp mode when the fault first appeared. I was able to get to 50 mph and wouldn’t go any faster because of the rain. It just wouldn’t pull as it normally would. It wasn’t like the limp mode on my Volvo, there’s no mistaking that - the car just crawls.

The engine warning light recently came on for the first time on 14 year old C-max. Oil & filters were recently changed and the oil level is correct. I consulted the C-max owners forum. Mixed results. Some owners ignored the light for months with no ill effects. Others ignored it and the engine blew up within a couple of weeks. Youtube showed how to use the inbuilt diagnostic tests. I did the checks accordingly and when it came to fault diagnosis, the reading said no problems! The light remains on. Given the age of the car and its cash value now being negligible I have decided to take a chance and ignore it. After several weeks the light just went off - and hasn't re-appeared for 3 months now.

Mine is an older 2010 ducato nearly stalled it once and light came on.went on line and saw if no fault next six times of normal stopping and starting light would go off. After many something like 40 times fault would disappear from memory altogether. Don't know if newer one is the same

I’ll be keeping a count with interest. So far, at three. Should reach six by tomorrow or the day after!

Having checked all fluid levels are ok, just drive steady some minor faults (gremlins) will clear the EML if the van is started 6 times with the fault not re occurring. one particular fault that may cause this is the plug on the end of the common rail for the injectors, if you open the bonnet look to the right hand end of the rocker cover towards the front and a bit lower down take this plug of and check for corrosion.

This morning I started the van - no yellow engine sign illuminated and it has driven fine today. That’s the fourth restart since the problem occurred yesterday. Not sure whether to be concerned it’s not the sixth restart but happy to see it gone nevertheless 🤞. Thanks everyone for your reassuring comments and suggestions.

Refer to Motorhome Questions section and:

Ducato 2.3 2018 loss power HELP

I've recently had similar problem, going in to Fiat on 31/10/22.

Ive found we lost power a few times couple weeks ago, but turning engine on and off helped.

Also:

Sorry this won't help you immediately. Good luck Smudger55

Thanks Smudger55. I’ll still be in Spain/Portugal at the end of the month so I’d be interested to hear of Fiat’s diagnosis. Cheers, David.

OK, I will let you know, I am pushing for a freebie, as checking our MHome vin, tells me it's a 2018 engine, which I believe requires a modification /update, think related to the link I sent. There was also a recall in 2017 for a similar issue, I think. Cheers Smudger55

Ok, that’s interesting. Although our van is a 69 plate I think the van itself is a 2018 model. I’ll try and check the VIN number against any recalls today.
