DONT USE THIS GARAGE, unless you live within the distance you can push your vehicle back to it !!

Their warranty is 'Return to base ONLY'

In short my Fiat Ducato motorhome (2.3 multijet - registered 2010) was delivered Engine Repair Services, Hull on the back of a low loader in mid November 2016. It had suffered major engine damage caused by the auxiliary belt shredding and wrapping itself around the timing belt.

The price of the full engine rebuild had already been agreed.

Time was of the essence as we had a Ferry crossing booked for early January to Spain.

Two weeks into the rebuild the mechanic (Chris) from Engine Repair Services, Hull, called me to let me know he was having a terrible time removing the glow plugs and the quickest and best option for me was a reconditioned head, luckily they had one in stock! EXTRA £350 on the bill straight away.

12 December, Drove back from Engine Repair Services, Hull to Manchester and everything seemed fine.

Checked the van a couple of days after Christmas and it wouldn't start, I thought it may be the battery so bought a new one. Still wouldn't start.

I can't get the van back to Engine Repair Services, Hull unless I pay £600 recovery costs so I turned out a couple of mobile diesel mechanics who eventually got it started but it was smoking like a trooper (whitish blue). Spain is now cancelled.

Back to Engine Repair Services, Hull! In fact four times back to Engine Repair Services, Hull in the next 9 months or so with smoke issues, emulsified oil in the rocker box and finally over a 1000 mile trip around Northern France in September 2017 the engine drank 12 Ltrs of water.

Guess what? The cylinder head Id been charged for was cracked. I delivered the van back to garage with two fault codes P403 and P638 (EGR and Throttle actuator)

Another head was fitted. I drove the van back to Manchester in limp mode with the exact same fault codes. No way was I returning my van back to Engine Repair Services, Hull.

I replaced the Mass Air Flow meter sensor, £80, the Throttle body, £205, EGR solenoid, £35. Stripped down and completely cleaned every fuse in the fuse box, (one fuse had blown F17 10 Amp) plus numerous other little jobs like resealing the windscreen scuttle and fitting a dedicated earth strap from the battery to the fitted earth strap.

Still no Joy.......................................

Between December 2017 and April 2018 a local garage replaced the EGR cooler unit, sent away and had the ECU checked, rediscovered the blown fuse F17 and traced that back to a short in the wiring caused by Engine Repair Services, Hull and replaced the breather flow sensor, another £1200. Above Fault codes now cleared but a new one emerges (not sure what code). Black smoke is now worse than ever and van is running in limp mode again.

Fiat (Stoneacre in Hyde now have a go under the bonnet). They discover a defective reverse gear switch which was shorting so that was replaced, £130. Drive away and still the black smoke bellows out, still in limp mode.

Took the van to Bredbury Car Services in Bredbury, (Diesel Specialist). Within four hours they called me to say that they had discovered the fault and the engine was now running like a train...................................

For those of you who have managed to read this far you are now going to laugh or your jaw will drop.

Engine Repair Services, Hull - Chris the mechanic when replacing the Bosch injectors back into the cylinder head fitted copper washers! Apparently these particular injectors are self sealing and do not use copper washers!!!!!!!!!!

I have a photo of one of the injectors removed from the engine which hopefully I will attach.

Needless to say (touch wood) the engine is running as I remember 20 months ago before the auxiliary belt shredded.

Cheers adgy

Since 1964 Gosh that makes me feel old.
Well that's a cautionary tale if ever I'd read one.
Really hoping that your motorhome settles down now & wish you good health to use it. (y)

So are you saying that the copper washers were the cause of the limp mode and smoking or was that something else,

Oh yes I read it all;)
