Our new MoHo needs an oil top-up at 450 miles (?). Manual says it may use oil for a few thousand miles.

Manual says Selenia WR Forward 0-30.

I can't find that easily in local shops but I an assuming that any good brand 0-30 fully synthetic oil will suffice?

Oil seems to be a minefield. Any advice appreciated Funsters

Thanks

Plenty on eBay.
Why don’t you ring major oil companies and ask if they do an equivalent?

Was hoping to buy some locally but ebay may be the only option if a major brand alternative is not suitable.

Just looked on ebay. Some good prices but the postage costs are more than the oil in some cases.

Thanks

Don't use any 0W30 oil. You need ACEA C2 oil to Fiat spec 955535.DS1

But you don't need to use Selenia Forward.

A quick check on Opie Oils website, which allows you to search by vehicle manufacturer specification shows the following are all approved.

Shell Helix Ultra ECT C2/C3
Millers XF Longlife C2
Motul 8100 EcoClean ACEA C2
Fuchs Titan GT1 Pro 2312

There will be others available from other suppliers. Look for an ACEA C2 0W30 oil and check the label or product data sheet for the text "meets or exceeds Fiat spec 955535.DS1" or "approved to Fiat spec 955535.DS1".

There is plenty of choice. Personally, I would say that you can't go wrong with Shell Helix Ultra, Motul or Fuchs Titan. All are cheaper than overpriced Selenia and equal or better oils from reputable manufacturers.

Yes you have to factor in the p&p

Why not plan your route past another supplier when your off on your next trip. If it was me I would try other oil makers before buying from eBay

Opie Oils list a few 0-30 C2 oils. One by Mobil. To my mind any quality oil of the right grade should do unless the experts on here disagree. We have a Eurocarparts locally.

Thanks Vipar

No Mobil oil comes up on Opie Oils website when you search for the correct Fiat spec.

You need to check that it meets the requirements as stated in your Ducato handbook.

There are hundreds if not thousands of ACEA C2 engine oils. For the Euro 6 engine, it also needs to meet or exceed Fiat 955535.DS1 as I said above.

That's the important bit. For instance, you will find probably ten or more types of Shell Ultra Helix. Only one will be correct for your van. Same with Fuchs GT1.

Be careful with ECP, they will offer you incompatible oils even after putting in your vehicle details. But they do stock Shell Helix Ultra ECT, so if ECP are convenient for you, that's the one I'd go with, and after using their current "discount code" it takes the artificially inflated price down to near what you can buy it for elsewhere ;)

Bet you wish you had not asked the question now.

;)
Selena is the oil recommended by Fiat for their engines. As it's a new motorhome you would be ill advised to use any other brand IMO. It should be easy enough to obtain from any Fiat servicing centre. I'm told it's very good oil.

Recommended via the owners handbook due to commercial agreement. Dealer workshop information says only that an ACEA C2 oil to the correct Fiat spec is required.

My local Fiat Pro dealer use Urania Daily engine oil at £9.20 a litre from bulk tank. If Fiat had warranty problems with that I guess they would have heard about it by now, but as the requirement (not recommendation) is only concerned with the oil specification rather than the brand it's really not a problem (y)

Bet it all comes from the same refinery anyway. As Deneb says, commercial agreement.

Go on Opie oils website.
They are very good and will courier you oil at a reasonable price.

Just as an aside, after reading todays Daily Torygraph I have installed the Shell GO+ app on my phone and found that it entitles me to 10% off Shell Helix Ultra prices at Shell service stations.

I don't know what the service stations retail the oil at or even if they stock 5L cans, but worth investigating as it is a good oil.

Pop into a main dealer and get the correct oil

The “correct” oil is available from many suppliers of car parts.

Usually at half the price of a main dealer.

Providing the oil you use is to specification of the vehicle manufacturer there won’t be any issues.

It does seem to be a bit of a minefield. Does anybody really believe that Motorhome dealers use anything other than what they have in their big tank when servicing our vans?

Moho dealers, Main agents etc will have large drums of oil.

These will be to certain specifications, or should be, to comply with manufacturers requirements.

Look after the warranty and get Selina from a Fiat dealer. Then, there can be no argument if you have a warranty claim. It's not that expensive from Fiat either, I think I paid about £12 a litre. I'm sure other oils are just as good and suitable, but I can do without the argument with Fiat if it all goes wrong.

Do take the advice regarding usage of the recommended oil, not cheap but it’s the recommended one and at the end of the day you won’t use that much to top up.

I agree but the oil spec seems to be different for all of the different engines used and changes frequently

Good job it doesn’t say use a particular brand of fuel.

Providing you don’t under spec you’ll be fine.
As the years move on the specs do seem to change.

Why would you take your “Van” to a Motorhome dealer for a Engine Service? Particularly still under a Fiat/Mercedes etc warranty, these modern engines are highly specialized and they don’t recommend some these oils for no good reason, these modern engines will not perform correctly with a cheap oil.
I do believe that some years ago the oil did come out of a 50 gallon drum and suited pretty much any engine, but a modern engine of which recent engineered one are capable of 300 thousand miles+ would not achieve this on basic oil.

During the warranty period it’s always best to play safe and purchase oil for top ups from the engine manufacturers list of main dealers and ask for a full product receipt (not just a card receipt) and keep it on file should you have problems in the future. By doing so you will have proof that you followed the warranty agreement should you have engine problems in the future.

You do realise that any oil from a reliable manufacturer which has approval to the correct Fiat specification stated on its packaging and/or TDS has been approved by Fiat for that use? They would find it very difficult to assert that it's the wrong specification oil when they have already agreed its suitability.

I hope you are also using the Fiat recommended washer fluid mixed to the stated specification ?

As I said previously main dealer correct oil no comeback not necessarily a great deal dearer plus piece of mind or save pound or two and your choice.
