My 2007 Carthago with a Fiat 2.8jtd engine has started to show the red engine management light when going up lengthy steep hills when the engine is under load. It goes off straight away when it is over the brow of the hill. No other issues and it doesn't effect performance, doesn't go in to limp mode or anything else. Has anyone had similar issues or suggestions of what could be the cause?

Since 1964 Gosh that makes me feel old.
I suspect that you might have a blocked radiator core, when the engine is warm, try to reach the centre of the radiator (engine off & away from the fan) & if the centre is cool or cold, you need a new one.
Mind you, this is just an educated guess.

Having had exactly the same problem on our past owned Hobby, I would suggest that
what you have is a sticking wastegate actuator on the Turbo.

Here is a photo.

Put the van on ramps and apply handbrake. Choke the wheels to ensure the vehicle cannot move.
The wastegate can be found at the back of the engine underneath.
Identify the wastegate and lubricate the linkages, including the rod that goes into actuator itself.
That should do the trick.

There are a heap of things that can bring on warning lights and a long climb up a gradient with a 3.5 tonne MH will just about be the worse thing for any malady within a turbo diesel engine.

Almost by definition the engine will be running at full boost pressure, and combustion temperatures will be at their highest, this all puts strain on things like the cooling system and all parts of the turbo inlet system in particular.

All suggestions so far in this topic are valid at some point on this type of engine.

I think that the Fiat 2.8 engine is very good (3 litre also very good), I seem to remember that the orange engine warning light will self-extinguish with some faults, but I don't think this is the case with all manufacturers engines.

But if it was a red light then that sounds more serious, like the first response said does it have adequate oil? When you turn the key and before you turn all the way for the starter there is a bar graph in the instrument display that tells you the engine oil level, 5 segments in the bar graph means that the engine is full to the correct level. Also confirm with a dip stick check.
