So, Friday 22nd May we are heading Oop Noorth! We are booked onto a site in York from Saturday 23rd for three nights, then just bimbling around for a few days before heading to the Soul Survivors meet. However, because I still work for a living (ok, you can stop laughing now) we can't get away until 4 and I know the traffic will be awful going North. So, can anyone suggest a fabulous, cheap (or even free!) stopover approximately 3 hours north of Gloucester in the direction of York? A pub would be good, or a cheapie site. It's only one night but a recommendation would be appreciated! :D

Depends on where you think you will be.

If the traffic's kind it isn't much more than 3 hours from Gloucester to York anyway. Obviously on a Friday afternoon at the start of half term the traffic isn't going to be kind. Best idea I can think of, if you have the Britstops book is to go for a couple of hours or so and then get the book out and see whats near you or failing that if you left it until early Saturday you could do it in one go, probably 3 and a half hours.

Thanks for your replies but our Britstop membership has expired! :( May just keep eyes open for a pub with a big car park and ask!

Are you thinking M42/M1 or M6/M62 route?

We are staying at Naburn Lock with some Funster friends!
Ah, that makes a big difference.......
Basically, your doomed..........

Only kidding. Your safe. You don't go into York centre. So it's make your way up to GODS OWN COUNTRY,
M1,A1, whatever takes your fancy, get onto the A64 York, get off at the designer outlet/A19 junction. Turn left as if your off into York on the A19, approx 300 yds, sign post for Naburn lock. It's about 3 miles to the site.
Enjoy, use boat or bus to get to the city. :)

That's what I would do how I usual do it is let them know you going to eat drink there but park out of the way corner of car park out of the way and not in view of the mane road never ben refused yet
and a britstops pub wont turn you away they don't have exclusive right's to the car park

We've just spent the weekend at Naburn, our second visit this year, we love the place. The Blacksmiths Arms has undergone a major refit althoughstill the same owners and amazing food (including gluten free).

Too many pubs in York, I like Lendall cellars. Very nice pub, till Jamie bloody Oliver took over part of it and made into a "posh nosh " eatery....
The cellars are still there, but a bit smaller. Brill pub, no mobile phone signal. The wife always forgets this, so she does the shops and I sample the ale!!!!:)

Oh, I know, it's 25 miles from home. Don't often go for the day, no one will drive........
