Good point, the MOT just looks for visible smoke, so you may actually have a deeper problem than just sooty deposits getting blown out. Over fuelling (too much being injected) can cause smoke, so new filters and a check over may be needed.
Good luck.

I would agree with this. Change the air filter (y)

Since 1964 Gosh that makes me feel old.
is this some form of diesel sold from the tanks at a petrol station?

A few years ago I had a Mercedes C class estate, 2.7 litre 5 cylinder diesel engine. That car did 52mpg day in day out unless I used supermarket fuel, then it'd drop to 42mpg! It didn't seem to matter which supermarket I used, I'd get the same results.

Now on the subject of your motorhome failing the MOT emissions test, you appear to be getting a little confused on what constitutes "stressing" the engine. Running a diesel engine like yours in too high a gear at too low a speed is pure hell for your engine! I think your saying that you dislike hearing the engine revving a bit more than your normal driving? If this is the case, all you need to do is run the vehicle one gear lower than you'd normally do for ten minutes or so. So if you cruise along your local dual carriageway in 4th instead of 5th that should do the trick.

Hope this helps...Robert.

many thanks for everyones advice. I have now passed the emission test , without too much of the Italian driving, as that stressed my dog and self out.

1x red something or other injection cleaner...about 100 miles
1x morrisons injection cleaner.....about 100 miles
1x of that expensive v stuff......another 100 miles
a few hills....but a quite a bit of using the 4th gear instead of the 5th.
= pass.
Still wondering how do you work out how much oil needs to be put in in the first place. If the dip stick shows half full....how many ltrs of oil do you need to put in to bring it to full??

Simple really....
Just put in a small amount and clean the dip stick then dip and check.
Not enough....put a little more in and clean and check again.
ALWAYS check with a clean dipstick.
1/4 liter at a time should be enough.
From the bottom dip stick mark to the full mark may be one liter or less.

A lot of dip sticks measure about 1litre between the marks but it does not need filling right up to the full mark, better a little low than overfull as excessive oil can feed an engine like fuel and you really do not want that to happen.

I thought it takes some "time" for the oil to enter the system, so you cant check straight away.
I have for years just filled up about 1/4 of a ltr at a time, when I checked. each week or two, but only because I never know how much to put in.
But the day I put in too much oil, I was driving my friends husband, he was a mechanic years ago. my oil was between 1/2 and 3/4, so I asked him how much should I put in, cause I had 1/4 ltr in one bottle, and a ltr in another. He said, put it all in it should be enough.
Now that I know from one empty line, to full line, is 1 ltr....I have some idea of how much to put in. thanks.

No....its ABOUT 1 liter

Every engine manufacturer is a little different.
As i said, 1/4 liter if its well below full and then check.
