We've tried lots of different products and in our old van we even had a SOG but I've now settled on thetford blue sachets they might be slightly dearer (we pay £6.99 from camping international) but they break everything down and there's never a smell, we also use lotus toilet rolls from france as they're designed for Foss tanks so the sheets just break up completely
With a SOG fitted you don't need any additives and everything breaks up naturally with the air flow I do use an occasional washing tab to keep the casset clean never get smells (I know there are those that hate Sogs and park as far away from them as they can) I do change the filter regularly so I'll keep my head down

We use Brewers Yeast tablets
search on here I did a big write up about the advantages

Same here - works fine, although with 5 of us the loo does get emptied nearly every day so how it fares for longer intervals I don't know.

I hate the smell of the blue stuff - to me it smells worse than the smell it's trying to cover.....

In almost 30 years I think I might have bought one bottle of Elsan blue. Thought the stench of it was worse than the waste With a three gallon Elsan and 5 of us it was never in there for long. Emptying every day. Sometimes twice a day. You just don't need it. With an RV these are vented to the roof so rarely do they smell and the waste breaks down easily.

IMO Spending a tenner to stick it down the loo is just totally unnecessary. That said, mine doesn't smell.

Hi.
I have used the Lidl stuff,in various amounts, and the smell coming out of the Loo,is enough to bring tears to a Glass eye. We are back using the Elsan blue, and can now invite people into the m/ho if needed, without them thinking we have a dead cat in the shower room
True,it does "Break your lumps up !" (Any old miners will be smiling,...think conveyor belt:eek::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:) and make the emptying easier, where am i going wrong? Use someone elses loo?(y)
Tea Bag
We've tried it and found the same thing, Elsan blue is much better in my opinion but I'd happily use something more environmentally friendly if it worked as well.

We're in the bio washing liquid camp, have used Tesco almost since the beginning. This winter we were running out and as we were visiting Gibraltar went into Morrisons and got a bottle of theirs. Seems to be more effective than Tesco, using the "smell" and "breakdown of contents" standards, but there again we've never had a problem with Tescos and it does keep the cassette nice and clean.

We did find that using more than a capful caused a chemical whiff so never use more. Also we try and empty every day.

When I changed from a caravan to a motorhome with no toilet flush tank. I put the pink flush fluid in a spray bottle to spray the bowl before flushing. I also use bio washing fluid but originally thought it was a bit smelly, so tried it without using pink spray and that seemed to do the trick. So I think the bio action is not helped by using the pink flushing spray.

You can buy American capsules of stuff to go in a black tank, or use Elsan blue or any other sort, or bio liquid, or some use cheap coke. Personally in seven years, I have never had a need for anything in our black tank. And, with a 45gal capacity it can be in there for weeks. Never had any trouble or smells. If there was ever the slightest whiff, Management's SuperNose would be on the case and I would certainly know about it. Remember, the blade is only open during flushing the rest of the time a big spring seals in closed. Even during emptying it's ok, its the grey water that really pen and inks, when dumping. :)
I agree, I used to religiously use Elsan in my black tanks and one weekend I totally forgot, and, to my surprise made no difference

I guess the advantage is that the black tank is down in the Bowles of the camper, and the tank has a domestic style soil/vent pipe right up to the roof so lots of air into the tank

In a service locker I keep emergency blue capsules, which if there was a need could be chucked in

I love by the mantra that before setting off, if it should full, fill it, so gas, fridge and water tanks are full. And if it should be empty, empty it, which applies to black and great tanks. Last Christmas/New Year we stayed for nearly three weeks in sub zero, temperatures and had the tank heaters of 24/7 and did wonder if that would have an 'ordorous effect' but dumping before we left the site was normal, just took a little bit longer, due to the volume

So, give it a go, nothing to loose and a lot to gain, if it doesn't work for your setup, pour in some Blue

Having read the above, admittedly not in its entirety I have concluded, taking into account all the other available evidence from contributors to this forum and from outside sources that the most appropriate comment I can apply to the subject is....informed as I am why would I now want to use the crap.

best advice i can give is contact your local water company. get a visit to a local sewage works .
i,m sure you will find it very interesting .
while there have a chat ,question the workers on blue chemicals in fact any of the so called ones .
it really can be a very interesting trip.
you may even get allowed to visit a fresh water works ,again very interesting .
down here schools get regular trips . they love it .learn alot in short time .

Last year we were using the Thetford chemicals (got them with the MH) - really didn't like the smell...very chemically smelling and I don't think they even did a good job of breaking stuff down

We switched a bio liquitab in the cassette and very dilute Elsan Organic in the flush this year - its so much nicer. I'm lazy so I don't tend to empty it until the light comes on, but even after a few days I can't say that I've noticed much of a small. And whilst I wouldn't say its a pleasure to empty the cassette its certainly a vast improvement on last year. I also think the cassette rinses out much quicker too.

What this is all down to is 'THE SMELL' That's caused my micro organisms noshing away in the tank, and farting as they do.......I kid you not. By adding anything containing formaldehyde, or even bleach, your killing the little guys off, so they cant fart. (y)
