Had a frustrating breakdown today so thought I’d share. About 10 days ago when bringing the van home to charge the leisure battery, I suddenly started getting repeated warnings to check the electronic parking brake with accompanying warning lights and alarm sounds.

Booked it into Adams Morey for today. Brought the van home yesterday in readiness.

This morning I couldn’t move the van as the handbrake had locked on so couldn’t get it to the garage for fixing. Talk about bad timing, one more journey would have done it.

Call Fiat Assist and the local people were out within half an hour. The chap eventually unlocked the brakes manually and disconnected the motors. Great stuff but then the van went into limp mode so I couldn’t get it to the garage anyway. (Test drive down the road and achieved 2 mph uphill!).

Now waiting for the recovery truck to take it off.

Nightmare! Illustrates nicely that maybe you should never normally use the parking brake on an automatic. I’ve always been a handbrake man but will try and change my ways.

Mines a 2025 Ducato 8 speed Automatic and when you put it into Park, the electronic handbrake automatically engaged, so unfortunately you have no choice😱

Mines the slightly older 9 speed and I had it set to do the same. You should be able to switch it off in vehicle settings.

Thanks, haven't come across that setting yet so will have a delve into head unit myriad of options.

I have a fly off manual handbrake on my Transit based auto PVC and I am gloating!!

I have heard this before that electric handbrakes are the Devil's own invention. I have one on my DS4 and fingers crossed it has given no problems.

Just to close this off. All fixed and working again, apparently a broken wire on the handbrake motor or sensor. Covered by the warranty thank goodness.

2025 Transits now have an electric handbrake! Frees up space in the cab, not sure on reliability. Our Hyundai Santa Fe had one and that never went wrong in 10 years.

Interesting. I am not put off based on personal experience. But the fly off handbrake works well. It does not really intrude on cabin space as it is always in the down position whether on or off (It is only levered up to apply or take it off) but it is a bit of a stretch.
