SWMBO bought me a load of bling for the KTM for my Crimbo, which was nice.

Among the hoard is a high power LED fog lamp.

I want to make it operate on the high beam switch but don't have a scooby abut such things!

Any advice from the stalls?

As it is an LED light it will not draw a lot of current ( proly only about an amp ) so you can go ahead and splice it straight in to the existing circuit
So it is just a matter of mounting the light, connect the black wire to earth ( often actually attach it to the light mount bracket ) and the red wire to the feed for the high beam. I would suggest nip to your local car shop and get some bullet connectors ( blue ones should be about right ) and a double female connector like this

I do not know what model or year you have so unable to say which wire in the headlight is for the high beam. But which ever one it is, cur it and put a bullet on each end
Put a bullet on the wire from the new lamp, then plug all three into the connector

As you are using the main beam circuit you will not have to add a further idiot light to conform to uses and construction regs, the high beam indicator is all you need legally

Roger all that Sir! You are a gentleman and a Scholar and a fine judge of horses!

I'm putting it on my KTM adventure 990 2006.

Mounting the light under the front fairing between the forks with a bracket I bodged up yesterday is done and dusted, I just didn't have a clue how to go about the wiring part, so your advice is very much appreciated.

I will give it a bash over the next few days and keep yyou posted.

Might as well use a blue scotchloc. Both rely on a blade cutting the insulation and are a poor way to join wires.
Bullet crimps are the way to go.

MOT fail? Really? Who'd a thunk it!

I used the term 'fog-light' as a generic catch all. It's actually one of these, more of a spot/flood combo thing. I hooked it up to a battery yesterday to check it and it almost F**king blinded me when I accidently activated it whilst pointed at my coupon!

Its really for day time running, high viz for the dopey cage drivers. I don't really ride at night, not since I retired anyway.

It will add some lightage to the OEM head unit which is frankly woeful. I had also thought of installing a HID unit but I can't really justify the expense and I wouldn't know how to anyway!

Perhaps I should invest in a high power bulb...

Even shrink wrap won't waterproof them.
Only way to do that is splice wires and solder then shrink and hope.
Problem is you will have two round wires parallel to each other so there's a gap, small but a gap, between the wires. You could run a thin bead of silicon in the gaps then shrink wrap... That would do it.
That connector you pointed to isn't waterproof either.
You'll see I gave the wrong info, re MOT, so deleted it.

Nahhhh.. As the connections will be tucked out the way they should be fine, but if you are worried about them best off investing in a pot of silicone grease and give em a thin coat of that ( or a squirt of ACF50, which is bloody excellent

Is there no room inside the existing headlight for additional wiring etc? You may also find a bunch of bullet connectors & if they're the "Japanese" size they are available to make a neat matching job.

Wheyhey….its in and working, along with some Philips High Energy bulb upgrades to the OEMs which to be fair had been in since '06. Her nose is still off as I thought I may as well put in a big f**k off Denali Sound Bomb horn as I am truly tired of cagers cutting me up; 130db should get their sleepy mobile wielding attention.

I think I can now be seen from the ISS!

When its all back together I will post piccies.

So, I Just tripped over the piccies that I promised about the install on the LED Spot, Denali horn and bulb up grade.

I alos retro fitted an extended oil drain pipe for future changes as removing the crash bars and tank was becoming a real PITA. A local branch of PIRTEK ran up a wee pipe, resistant lining, S/S braid and couplings for about £30 - HUSSAR!

4 small jobs that grew arms and legs (don't they always).

Perhaps not the most interesting of pictures but it can be done, all MOT passed in March as well, the tester, who has been testing my bike for 12 years said he nearly soiled his boiler suit it was so loud!

And, pour encourage les autres, if I can do it; anybody can...

KTM do a spot/fog light kit for the 990 which can be wired to come on with high beam. Wonder if you could have reused the connectors from that kit for your purpose? Don’t recall if that kit included new switchgear though.

Don't know mate. I tend not to buy stuff like that, especially KTM stuff. I'm sure its an Austrian TLA for "really fu**king expensive"!

The wee LED light that I put in was primarily to increase visibility, and I think it only cost about 6 quid. I manufactured the bracket and grill from stuff in stock so they cost me naught.
