Solars not much use until at least April assuming the sun finally decides to show up,unless you’ve got loads.

Some morons must be paying it or they would reduce their prices

I don't mind paying for leccy IF I need it and have the choice not to.... HOWEVER sites (CCC & CAMC among others) who policy is theres the pitch including leccy .... "OH you don't want leccy"... tough you are getting it IS a rip off.

You can't blame the sites for charging this, when you look around and see awnings with 2/3 KW electric heaters on 24/7, it's easy to run up £6-7 worth. The problem being if they are charging it, people will want to get their money's worth.

we spent last new year on a site , £20 a night inc elect for 24hrs, it was -6 deg , heating was on 24-7
if I burnt 3kw per hr for 24hrs at 15 pence a kw that’s £10.80 ,

as said above , the problem is if they force it on you & you don’t want or need it ?

The problem is that some inconsiderate people insist on going out for the day and leaving the heating on and having electric heaters running in their awnings .we go to a small site who were considering putting meters in .But the cost of changing over wasn't cost effective. This year they look like the first time they will not make a small profit.

One of the CLs we use has metered electricity and it is very easy to run up £6/7 per day In winter. Can cut this back significantly using gas only heating but on E/G mix it quickly mounts up. However at least you get the choice.

Until now I have never had solar and because we always had to drive at least every third day and did drive most days, we could manage without ECU fine. But now I have gone to the dark side with a caravan we plan to use solar a lot. We normally stay on the small CS sites without ECU, but I am not sure if I will need to get a generator

CLs and CSs are seen as small peaceful sites and I can’t see a generator being tolerated on many of them.

Unfortunately more and more CL's and CS's are going down the EHU route but admittedly you have more chance of negotiating not to use and therefore not pay for leccy.... Not like the mainstream club sites.

I had a Jenny once , got rid of her quickly , now I’ve got a Tracy , does that count ?
Did she have brown hair, average built & about 5ft 6in? :inlove:

Nah didn't know her. :roflmto:

Yes, it's partly the people with the attitude of "I've paid for this so am going to use it fully" who leave the heating on, etc. that lead to the need for site owners to charge highly. But also site owners need to recoup the capital outlay of providing EHU which is not insubstantial plus annual testing, maintenance and so on.

Luckily, we rarely need it. With solar and onboard LPG, 200Ah batteries, three-way fridge, efficient 12v appliances (no inverter), gas cooking and heating, we are pretty much self-sufficient. If only we could generate our own water and somehow make the cassette contents disappear! It's the latter two that give us a four-day self-sufficiency limit. I suppose a spare cassette and not showering would double that!
