Hi All. We need to buy an electric cooler box both for days out in the car and also longer trips in the Motorhome. It’s prime purpose is to store and keep cool beer/ wine. In the Motorhome we are usually on a mains hook up but obviously in the car on days out 12 v would be the power source. Can you suggest decent quality or types please ?

Hi,

The best type to buy is a compressor refrigeration. Expensive but worth it. Even if you don't wish to leave it plugged in whilst using in the car parked up, you can still use it on the move or put freezer packs in it. When you are on EHU, it will be far more efficient at cooling.

Been moho’ing for a time now
we have on that we don't use now, used it when we used to tent 240/12. The problem with them is that they consume a lot of amps on 12v, ok when the engine is running but without the engine they are very thirsty.

A consideration is where you are going to put it when you stop in the MH? We have one which fits between the seats of our PVC although we lift it down and put it sideways behind the passenger's seat when travelling. We need it because our fridge is quite small as we have an oven above it.

Photo taken a few moments ago. The dog is an optional extra. :)

I originally connected it to a cigar lighter socket but this wasn't reliable, especially when driving. I tried the smaller DIN socket but eventually fitted a proper 12v plug and socket - the cream square in this photo. You can read the full story on this picture - cigar lighter at the top, DIN socket and then the square plug! :)

I had one for the car when I went racing. It was one that ran off of the cig lighter. Left it on overnight. Guess who had a flat battery in the morning?😢

on and off since 1984

I've just bought a dellonda it's a fridge freezer 60 watts on 12 volt, it has a cut out to save the battery. I got it for my day camper I've tried it on main power but not yet on 12v, it's not cheap but it's the cheapest fridge freezer, so if you want cold beer and ice-cream this is the one.

When i showed swmbo the photo with optional extra she wanted the dog.
Me i saw a picnic box for the toad. We have an Ertil fridge that we used in the bongo (and in awning 100w solar on van and trailer 2nd hab battery in trailer).
For 20A power connector i used specific 20A "cigar sockets" from a Landy specialist.
Have you any info on the square connector?
Ps currently no intention to stick a solar panel on the up!
My son has a phobia of fridges in cars after he burnt his bum on a chocolate strip connector used to keep our 3 way fridge cold on a 250 mile towing trip.

I got the plug and socket from here. It's very basic and you have to solder the wires to the pins, or blades. I suspect is a very old design, the original was probably made in Bakelite. :)

Looking on the page I see they now do one with 3 round pins - this might be a better choice.

A compressor version will use a tiny fraction of the power of a traditional thermoelectric box, but costs many, many times more. Most cars would easily drive a compressor for a day, possibly even two, without the starter battery going under 50%. Thermoelectric, not so much.

Many moons ago i had a thermoelectric cooler kill a battery overnight when i forgot to turn it off overnight. Arm and a leg later ( over 300 notes) and new battery a niece new ertil fridge/frezer and 100w solar panel last a fortnight no problem.

DBK i recognised the connectors now we used to have the posh versions on the pennine folding camper.
