250w is the legal maximum as a licence free push bike.

£700 is plenty when you consider what you get for your money, a cheap frame an electric motor and an expensive battery.

Look for decent watt-hours in battery size if poss. 24V 10Ah = 240Wh or 36V 10Ah = 360Wh. 36V seems the norm now. 36V with 7Ah = 252Wh so a bit more than the 24V example above. Watt/hours are your "gallons" of fuel.

Never heard a bad word about A&S.

I looked on ebay, first one looks a winner, good battery size. Loads more.

Three years and counting, 30 years a tent tower.
Over 250W is illegal as an E-bike, it must be registered taxed and insured like a motorbike. E-bikes must also be of the pedelec type if you want to use them on bike paths or lanes. Ie no throttle control!

Not at the bottom end but we have just purchased a pair of Merida pedelec bikes, very impressed with power, range and build quality. They're also not too heavy so I can get them on the bike rack, we found the cheaper bikes tended to be a bit heavier.

I’d get Li-Ion (certainly avoid Ni-Cad) batteries and focus on their capacity rather than the power of the motor. How far will you want to travel between charges? Marketing data will be optimistic, so I’d halve whatever they claim rather than believe it. Next look at the total weight and keep an eye on your payload (where will they be carried?). With a limited budget, expect modest results. I’d be suspicious of ‘special features’ which could be at the cost of something else.

I’d prefer a motor at the crank (pedals) rather than in the hub (wheel) because crank motors enjoy the advantage of the gears. Hub motors are tending to stall when you need them most, going up hill.

A.S. bikes. Have owned 5 to date. More than their excellent bikes for the price, is the warranty offered by Peter the company owner. On the very few occasions I have needed any help, they have immediately repaired, serviced or replaced any thing without question.

We have a couple of folding electric bikes with 20" wheels which we find are very good.
They are easy to store and the 20" wheels are big enough for most environments.
We have found the important things are.
Weight, Gearing and riding position. If you have all 3 of these then you can use them as a normal bike some of the time and a powered bike the rest of the time. A good gear set means you can pedal on most hills to assist the motor and conserve battery power.

I can recommend Pro Rider Ebikes. My wife has one and I have an all singing and dancing German Ebike and her Pro Rider out performs mine in every department. Particularly hills and battery endurance. We paid £499 for it about 2 years ago.

Another vote for bicycles4u we have two Evora bikes from them about 550 quid, light folders, with good range. Our have throttles but these are phased out now due to change in legislation, but were ok until early 2016. Fold small for garage and light enough to lift onto bike rack!
Probably not the best bikes but best, in my view, bike per pound!

I brought Caroline the Pendleton as mentioned in previous post from Halfords at £600 on 12 months interest free credit.
I was going to buy ANCHEER 26inch 36V Foldable Electric Power Mountain Bicycle with Lithium-Ion at £800 on Amazon but found exactly to same bike on Ebay for £435 inc delivery, ordered and delivered in 4 days via DHL.
Good quality bike for the price. Includes front light, mudguards and horn. Good battery distance and not too heavy.

whats the diference between li on batteries and LiFePo4
LiFePo4 are another type of lithium battery. They are more stable if damaged by collision or short circuit, they contain fewer nasty chemicals and I think they are lighter and can take more recharges than some of the other types.

the new Focus "Project Y" e-bikes look like they have a lot of promise
https://www.focus-bikes.com/int/project-y-future-racing-bikes . 12kg all in, inc a 4kg removable battery ;)
clearly going to be expensive though.

Well send PMs, daft bidding against each other.
My MIL did that when we went to a plant auction ... we were both bidding on the same plants ... just the two of us!
