Eire. pet passport? (1 Viewer)

just read in the caravan camping and motorhome guide Ireland 2015 that a pet passport is required, even if travelling from the UK. Is this correct? Tia

My understanding from a contact in the Department of Agriculture, is that the EU rules have been harmonised and this results in the requirement to have a passport.

However, a risk based approach has been adopted to enforcement. Bringing personal pets to and from the UK is considered a low risk to the country's animal health status, so there is no routine inspection

On this basis I would not bother

It seems that although 'officially' you do, as there are no checks on people entering The Republic from the UK, then no one bothers.

It won't be travelling from the UK to RoI that you would have an issue. There are no checks travelling from the UK to France.

It's travelling in the other direction that there may be checks and would cause you a problem if you don't have a pet passport and haven't had the tapeworm treatment. For what it costs it's a no brainer - you don't want to be in a position of not being able to get home.

If you're travelling directly from the mainland UK to Ireland the best people to speak to will be the ferry company. They will be able to tell you exactly what their requirements are as even if there are no official checks it may be that they carry out their own and will stop you travelling.

My dog travels to and from the UK/Eire in one of our trucks regularly .... No problem at all.... No passport required although she has one.

We take our dogs over and back to Ireland regularly and they don't need passports (although they all have them). No one even checks if you have them on board and you don't have to pay for them either unlike ferries/Eurotunnel where they charge £16 per dog per crossing.

I Have checked with DEFRA and they say NO passport is required to enter UK from Ireland
