You need to have an S1 which is the form issued to UK residents of EU countries to register for healthcare . The important word is ‘and’This is the bit that caught my eye...
Apologies to you young 'uns
Some people may be able to get a new UK-issued EHIC which will remain valid after 1 January 2021.
You can apply if you're:
- an EU, Swiss, Norwegian, Icelandic or Liechtenstein citizen living in the UK by 31 December 2020
- a UK State Pensioner or receiving some other exportable benefits, and you have a registered S1 form or E121
- a frontier worker (someone who works in one state and lives in another) by 31 December 2020, for as long as you continue to be a frontier worker in the host state, and you’re eligible for an S1 form or E106
- a worker posted to work in another EU country, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Switzerland by your UK employer, where the country has agreed to let the posting continue
- an eligible family member or dependant of one of the above
- a UK student studying in the EU, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Switzerland by 31 December 2020

Guess who forgot to renew their EHIC which expired in July!We renewed ours in October they arrived with an expiry date of 2025, I guessed then that something was afoot.

Never mind you will soon be able to get the new card which cover more than just Europe.
I think it is fairly simple really. Firstly the arrangement with Europe was never going to go away. Most EU countries have finely honed systems for identifying people from other countries and ensuring that the cost of their treatment is claimed back from the country in which they reside. The UK is rubbish at this and consistently fails to claim these costs and has lost millions if not billions, to the advantage of the other countries. Why would they give that up?

I could be wrong but can’t see a GHIC being issued. The cost of medical care in the US is eye watering the cost of even anti sickness pills for example were $250 each ! I needed two an ambulance a hydration drip and a couple of hours in A&E was $5000. Why Global? Because since Brexit we have been busy making trade deals with other countries and for the most part these include a reciprocal health cover arrangement. Long may it continue

And if UK has been rubbish at collecting costs from our 27 neighbouring European countries what makes you think that we are going to suddenly, in the middle of a pandemic and vaccine roll-out, improve our systems to charge for all of these new arrangements with health-tourists coming from all over the globe?
The UK has one with New Zealand and vice versa for emergency healthcare requirements ie accidents or something that requires immediate treatment but I understand it is only for short term visitors and not those on longer stays as presumably would be paying local NI contributions so already eligible.Can you provide any evidence of these reciprocal health cover agreements please?

If you are really interested you will need to read the details of all of the 58 plus trade agreements that Liz Truss has signed up since Brexit, or, wait for the new GHIC to become available.Can you provide any evidence of these reciprocal health cover agreements please?

We don't have a trade deal with the USA and I can't see one coming along in the near future. I also agree that the costs could be very very high.
Of those 58 trade agreements, how many are not a roll-over, from existing EU agreements with no reciprocal health arrangements?
Sadly lots and lots
I said in my original comment "for the most part". Not all will, it would not be appropriate for some, and impractical for others. We will all need to wait and see as even as I write some agreements are in the negotiating stage. If you want a rummage have a look at:
