We like our boiled eggs with a runny yoke, just starting to harden around the edges.

Water boils at approx 92 degrees C at an altitude of 2300m above sea level.
We have dippy eggs planned for breakfast one morning at Val Thorens during the forthcoming MHF ski meet!

Does anyone know how long we should boil them for at 2300m altitude to attain the correct results?

Or should we give up and have a FB pie for breakfast instead?!

At that altitude I calculate about 3/4 of an hour just to be on the safe side, then take your teeth out and gum it to death.......to avoid chipped teeth........:thumb:

Heston says
1.
Place the eggs in the smallest pan available and only add enough cold water to cover them. Put the lid on the pan and place over the highest heat possible.
.
2.
When the water comes to the boil, remove the pan from the heat and wait for 6 minutes.
.
3.
After the time has elapsed, remove the lid and carefully remove each egg. Cut the top of each egg before serving in egg cups.

Here's something we bet that Charlton Heston didn't know-

Here are other values for the boiling point of water a various barometric pressures and the approximate altitudes that corresponds to under normal conditions.

31 in. Hg: 214 °F or 101.1 °C (at approx -1000 ft or -305 m below sea level)

30 in. Hg: 212.15 °F or 100 °C (at approx sea level)

29 in. Hg: 210.3 °F or 99.06 °C (at approx 1000 ft or 305 m above sea level)

28 in. Hg: 208.44 °F or 98.02 °C (at approx 2000 ft or 610 m above sea level)

27 in. Hg: 206.59 °F or 96.99 °C (at approx 3000 ft or 914 m above sea level)

25 in. Hg: 202.89 °F or 94.94 °C (at approx 5000 ft or 1524 m above sea level)

23 in. Hg: 199.19 °F or 92.88 °C (at approx 7000 ft or 2134 m above sea level)

21 in. Hg: 195.48 °F or 90.82 °C (at approx 10,000 ft or 3048 m bove sea level)

19 in. Hg: 191.78 °F or 88.77 °C (at approx 12,000 ft or 3658 m above sea level)

17 in. Hg: 188.07 °F or 86.71 °C (at approx 15,000 ft or 4572 m above sea level)

10 in. Hg: 175.11 °F or 79.51 °C (at approx 27,000 ft or 8230 m above sea level)

5 in. Hg: 165.85 °F or 74.36 °C (at approx 42,000 ft 12,802 m above sea level

Here in Norfolk, water boils at 101 degrees C !

Yes, Many times, it was very very hot in the ampitheatre you know......

p.s. Do you put any salt into the water you boil your eggs in, as this will also affect the boiling temp.
Sea (salt) water (1.025) boils at 103.7 deg C so better factor that in as well ....

or

How about croissants and coffee..........:thumb:

Aug 09 to date 9,000 miles!
My physics teacher told us that was why they were so keen to get back from climbing Everest (in 1953 I mean) - was cos they couldn't get a decent cup of tea, he said.

Although knowing this was utter bollards, even when I was 11, this actually has enabled me to remember for 50 years so far, that water boils at a lower temperature the higher you go!

mmmm, that could mean, we could offset the altitude by adding loads of salt to the water, thus adjusting the cooking time to be closer to that required at sea level!

Also, an added bonus is that we could then sling the hot salty water down the sink and it will give the slide valve on the grey tank a good defrost!:thumb:

Good advice!

Nah, you're missing the best way Jon, you just blu tack it to your skis and then go so fast that the heat caused by the friction with ski and snow cook it perfectly!
