We are planning this summer’s trip and hope to make it to Scotland. Please can you give me your recommendations for camping near the city with good access? Obviously I can google it or look at tripadvisor but I would value first hand recommendations. TIA

Morten hall. That’s the name from memory, nice site with regular bus service into the city.

whenever we go, we stay at the CMC site on marine drive, nice walk / cycle along the prom, 10 min walk to bus to city centre or royal yacht, usual CMC facilities.

As per the reply from Golly we have stayed on the C&MC site on Marine drive and the facilities are very good. It’s a ten minute walk to the bus stop and it’s a very frequent service into the city or Leith or there’s a minibus direct from the site.

Thanks everyone, looks like there’s an obvious favourite.

If anyone else has some must do places within a couple of hours drive from Edinburgh, we’d be grateful to hear them too.

As do I regularly but as stated I am after first hand experiences from funsters.

If it's camping sites you are after the 2 mentioned are pretty much it. You could wild it down at Portobello or Musselburgh if that's your thing, I've done it on numerous occasions.

If you choose the Marine Drive site you will not be to far from Porto and Fi's for excellent food. The Kelpies are a short leisurely drive way.

As mentioned I'd recommend the CMC site at Silverknowes, I certainly wouldn't recommend Morton hall. If you're a member of the CMC then they have a small CL just outside the city with great access to and from the city, it's called Dammhead next to the artificial ski slope no shower but hook up and WC. If you want slightly further out there's a lovely side at Mussleburgh and bus cost same. If you are fully self sufficient and would like a good pub stop over then try The Old Colliery next to Sheriffhall P&R, great place with very good value for money food. He's also okay with you just buying drinks, if you have Facebook just message them asking permission and Hugo the manager will reply, really nice guy who couldn't do enough for you.

I'm an Edinburgh boy, athough I don't live there now. I have tried both the big sites in the last six months, Mortonall and the one down in Leith (name escapes me), both are excellent. Good facilities, nice and clean, quiet and with good transport to anywhere you want to be.

I couldn't recommend them more.

Worth mentioning that Edinburgh has a superb bus service, second to none. Not worth even attempting to drive in the city itself.

Ven, if it’s a site then CMC is fabulous, if you want a FLT for a couple of nights pm me and I’ll tell you where! I live in centre of the city.

Try ROSLIN - SLATEBARNS CARAVAN PARK
didn't mean to shout! Just as it came out after copying. About 6 miles from city. Great bus service! Roslin chapel in walking distance. Remember the Davinci Code?

I believe you can park your van at many European airports, like Malaga, Faro, Alicante etc. and jump on an easyJet to Edinburgh, and I think you can take an umbrella as hand luggage and just wear your big coat...........?

Might give Mortonhall a go with Eriba this year as Daughter due to give birth in Feb at hospital not far away. My brother lives 5 minutes away from site and regularly visits Stables bar, he is getting a hip op soon so we might be needed to be nearby.
Ven nice enough area and you're near IKEA and Costco ;)

Just sit on ya comfy chair in the sun, drink a bottle of Buckfast and irnbru, munch on a deep fried haggis, and look at some pictures of rain. I’ll play some bagpipe music for you on the Bluetooth speaker........?
