On several trips in France this year, we noticed that there was a shortage of sockets for hooking up. So we thought about getting a splitter so we could share a socket. However, I'm struggling to get my head round two things:
  1. If the socket is 6A, if more than one van plugs into it using a splitter isn't the available ampage per van reduced?
  2. If this is the case, are you likely to be rebuffed if approaching someone plugged in and asking to remove their plug and reconnect using the splitter?

And I thought it was a thread about engines.

Bear in mind they will only be running their fridge & battery charger.
It's only the British that try and run everything off mains, a hangover from caravans.

1. Yes
2. Yes

Depends on weather the other people are using just to keep battery topped up and say fridge, but some will have taken a electric kettle fan heater electric hob and anything else that will save them money.

We had an episode where our ehu lead was just short to reach an empty socket so I moved a plug to another socket on the other side of the post not realising one was 6amp and the other was 10 amp before I got back to my van it had been unplugged, I thought somebody was having a laugh so reconnected, got back to the van no power,

It turned out an arsehole with that plug did not have the courtesy to pop out and tell me they needed the larger supply, some strange people about 🙂

Whilst in Germany earlier this week i noticed how little power a motorhome uses. In Germany you buy ehu in kw units, so this then shows how much you have consumed.

Obviously I’m not the only one who was surprised by this as every Stellplatz apart from one, had enough electric left on the meter by someone else for me to use without requiring a top up.

1. Yes
2. Maybe

If you share with someone else, it's polite to negotiate first. You must not collectively exceed the supplied current or you will all lose supply. Continental vans only need EHU to recharge batteries and run a fridge, so it's not an issue. But (some) Brits may be unwilling to share.

You unplugged their mains connection without the courtesy to first ask them if they had anything critical (to them) connected and if they minded, and they are the ‘arsehole’?

1 definitely yes. Available current is split between the two connections. If one is using 1 amp that leaves 5 amps for the other for example.

It was plugged in to my allocated pitch supply 🙂
