Hi I am thinking about having the ECU Remapped on my Mercedes Sprinter based motorhome as it seems to be underpowered whilst towing the car
and was wondering if any of you Funsters have had their motorhome remapped or fitted a tuning box, thanks Ray.

All I would recommend is having had good quality boxes fitted to our last couple of motorhome. Be aware that the extra torque is great but there is a limit to watch the clutch under load.

Remap
If you decide to do it do some research on who you get to do it
Some are good some ok and some others
Tuning box tend to be a fairly basic way to getting the injectors to deliver more fuel

There was someone on here had a lot of problems with a sprinter auto with a remap cost him a fortune and a new ecu the remap company would not pay up.

Thanks to everybody who took the time to reply to my question about remapping the ecu, will give it some thought as I don't want to cause any damage to the vehicle.

I'd go for a remap every time, done properly they take more than just the amount of fuel pushed through the injectors into account. Again if done correctly there should be little to damage the engine, it's already derated anyway to accomodate the vast differences in areas it is designed to be sold to.

Boxes are simple to use and can of course be disconnected easily enough. But a remap is easy to reverse too, although you do need the services of the remapper - but I'm told they will revert foc if you don't like the result.

As regards the clutch, if the vehicle is operated correctly it shouldn't affect it. If you're in the habit of "slipping" the clutch then, yes, it will wear more. But I was always taught that the clutch should be either fully engaged before applying power or fully disengaged and use the brakes to hold it, for instance, on a slope.

Problems? I wouldn't take too much notice of one bad report without knowing the full story. If there were problems the remappers would go out of business.

Right - now I'll admit to not having had this done as I'm perfectly satisfied with the performance, consumption etc.

On 3rd van so not a total newbie....
We have a tdi tuning box, on a fiat 180hp, no problems, I prefer the box as I can remove if necessary or adjust.

I previously had a remap (by a client who runs a tuning business and btcc team do should know their stuff, but although the power was good, it smoked badly, had to get them to turn the tune down, which then became pointless.

Not sure where you are based. I had my Ducato 2.3 remapped at Auto-mate just off the A1 in Notts. Didn't take that long but results are v good. Made a big difference for pulling car on A-frame.
There was a thread a couple of weeks ago reviewing Auto-mate.

Are any of you declaring these remaps to the insurance company (you should be) If you have what difference has it made to insurance premiums?

There’s been lots of posts reference remapping. I would just change gear a bit more often and save your money. Engines don’t mind revving a bit.

No change.
Reason seems to be that it's mostly for torque increase rather than for boy racer bhp. Although there is a bhp increase it's no more than approx. 20%.
Clearly there's a limit on torque increase due to clutch capability but most go for a modest remap.

I know it's a car and non-diesel but I used the Bluefin from Superchips on my Ecoboost Fiesta 1.0 giving me so much more power and fun, no downsides after 3 years, also I can reinstall the original map whenever I wish. Once we're up and running, I'll probably get one for my Ford based Chausson [170hp up to 214hp, and extra 65Nm torque]

Quantum did mine 6 years ago, 130Bhp to 160Bhp on a 2.3 engine. Made a big difference and had no problems.
