I've been thinking of getting a echo dot for the van as I noticed the other day that they run at 12v, not a problem I though, I'll just go on ebay/amazon and get a 12v dc cigarette lead for it, but no, I cannot seem to find such a lead except one from China.
I'm thinking it would be fine just to chop of the power cord that comes with it and directly hardwire it into the van (fused obviously). But usually if it were that simple then a ton of leads should be available to buy. Has anyone had any experience in running one off their 12v supply? I've seen plenty of 5v to 12v adaptors but I don't like the idea to be honest and seeing that they are 12v anyway it seems just pointless.

Cheers
Martibt

My Amazon Echo runs via a very small inverter that plugs in an extra 12v socket.
An alternative idea for you.
It will tell you on the label what power it requires so surely you can buy the correct plug, wire and 12v plug separately?
RSComponents or Maplin?

I've got one somewhere. Been tidying up of late so it could be anywhere. I"ll look it out tomorrow if I have time :)

I use the USB 5v to 12v type, and it works very well.......
If you have a handy USB socket, that is!

Either a 12v regulator or an Echo Puck (USB powered, what I use-but no speaker).
12v in a van isn't really 12v, it could be anything from 11-15v. Regulator fixes this

By what means are you planning to connect to the internet OTR?. My understanding is that "Alexa" connects continuously to the "Net" which could prove expensive/draining on a "Mobile" system?

I use a Huawei mifi - Alexa doesn’t use much data, and we normally use ‘her’ to stream local radio stations when pitched. I have a 20gb/month SIM from 3, and have only ever used 12-15gb even when watching streamed tv - better things to do!

Have you looked at the Ultimate Ears range, better sound quality and a rechargeable Li-ion battery. We have a Megablaster it will run for about 16 hours off the battery. Thinking about getting one of their smaller blasters for the van.

There are several types of Echo devices and several "generations" of them. They do not all use the same connecting system. I have a small Echo dot, which I think is 2nd generation and that just uses 5V with a micro USB socket. So it would be easy to just plug it into a USB adaptor in the motorhome in the same way as you would plug in a phone to charge. The problem is that it does not give a very good sound musically.

We also have the larger Echo speaker which is 2nd generation. That gives much better sound but it comes with its own mains adaptor which outputs 15V to a round pin socket.

Thanks for all your replies/suggestions, Millcourt's suggestion seems to be the popular choice, it didn't occur to me that the vans 12v isn't true and will vary. I'm mid build at the mo and intend to fit a mifi unit so internet won't be a problem?. Thinking of getting a Echo dot for the kitchen at home and taking it out to the van when we go away.

With an International expectation of sales I would expect the the makers would have designed the Circuitry to cope with fluctuations of Voltage?. Just taking Spanish MAINS I have seen anything from 170V to 240 Volts (on nominal 220) Which has to be coped with by any regulating device used to Obtain the "desired" range

That's the one I use works fine.

If buying an Echo Dot from Amazon, be aware the price varies a lot. I bought 4 on 4th December last year - one for home, one for the MoHo and two for Christmas presents for our sons. At the time Amazon was charging £22. Today the are priced at £49.99!!!!! If not in a hurry to buy, perhaps worth waiting.

^^ This is very true! Also Firesticks are worth buying at the ‘right’ time too!

This true for almost everything you buy from Amazon and Amazon market.

I would recommend that you get an add-in called "Keepa". Each time you look at any product on Amazon it will show you a graph of the price for that product over whatever period you want to set it to. Shows you very quickly how things goes up and down with time. You can also set up a price you want to buy the product at and it will alert you when the product is on sale at that price or lower.

Is this an add on in the amazon site or an app or..?

I'm running mine direct from the vans 12V with a cheap cable from eBay, I'll try and find the link.

As I have already said different generations of Echo Dot have different connections and different operating voltages. I think Amazon are up to 3rd generation now. So you will need to know what your model is before buying anything for it.

Keepa now £15 pm got to buy a lot of stuff to justify that?

I think only the latest model runs on 12V. The OP says his runs on 12V.

Don't I know it! I was looking two days ago and they were £29.99, today they are £49.99.
I signed up with camelcamelcamel a while back when I was looking for a cctv system, you type in a product and they tell you the price history and you can set price alerts, I managed to get a £350 system for £120?
