Just bought my OH an bike and was wondering how best to insure for UK and Europe trips. Would a dedicated policy be the best or try to add to existing van insurance.
Thanks all.

Cheapest insurance for bikes is on the house insurance if they will.
Double check with them
Some do and some don’t

Our e bike insurance is with Direct Line along with our house insurance. They had to be specifically noted as e bikes on the schedule.

household insurance may not cover transporting on a motorhome rack or when travelling and cycling abroad ..

House insurance is the cheapest option had to shop around and change ours a few times to make sure we were covered.
Currently with co-op their standard cover only covers bikes up to £1000 each but includes e-bikes. Don't know what it costs to extend it as our bikes are 3 years old now so we are ok with the £1k limit. They are helpful and the online chat is good as you can ask for a copy of the chat so anything they say you have it in writing.

Had them on the house policy for the first year but looking at the conditions for keeping them secure while out and about decided not to bother as almost impossible to comply with. Mainly use them in Spain so pretty secure on the pitch and we don’t leave them anywhere if we go for a ride.

We were ultra careful.. but in Spain, while we were parked up outside a Lidl in Roquetus de mar , a thief snatched and cycled off with my bike while my son was holding onto it..

nowhere is safe and ebikes are prized targets .. easy to steal and fast getaway :(

another was taken from the rack on an aire in France during the night.. high quality motorcycle cable cut through and we never heard a thing.. battery angle grinders are a menace ..

My advice... If they are expensive bikes I would get proper bike insurance and make sure it covers all risks.. and it's not cheap..

I found it impossible to get a dedicated bike insurance policy that covered our E bikes because they insisted on gold standard through frame locking, which is not possible on GoCycles. The standard household policy did not cover the value we needed. However John Lewis Specialist Home Insurance provided what we needed, including cover whilst in a motor vehicle subject to it being fully locked and the bikes hidden from sight. No problem in a motorhome garage but not covered on a rack. At first the policy looked expensive but it was less in total than 2 x bike policies + standard home policy.

Aviva home insurance policy covers our ebikes when they are locked to our tow bar. They are not covered in the bikes section but in the expensive items section. The ebikes are worth about 2 grand each and Aviva will cover ordinary bikes in the bike section up to 5 grand or more at a price but this is their way of covering ebikes, they had to have very precise details of them. Bizarre I know. They are covered when we are out and about as long as they are padlocked to an imovable object but most policies didn't class a motorhome as immovable despite Vanbitz alarms, immobilsers, trackers and bike loops.
AXA didn't recognise ebikes under any circumstances.

We unfortunately had just renewed our home insurance about a month before we bought the ebikes and our current home insurer doesn't cover ebikes so we now have a separate policy from Velosure - £223 to cover 2 ebikes (worth £2k & £1450) for theft and accidental damage, with a 5% of value excess and European cover for 90 consecutive days per trip. For bikes worth between £1501 & £2500 they require a Sold Secure silver rated lock, and bikes must be locked to an immovable object, defined as:
(a) any solid object fixed in or on to concrete or stone, which is not capable of being undone, removed with, or lifted under/over the cycle.
(b) a properly fixed motor vehicle roof rack or properly fixed vehicle cycle rack.
(c) at train stations, a cycle rack supplied by the train station expressly for the purpose of securing bikes, and within the jurisdiction of the transport police.

and later on
3 Security requirements for vehicles where the cycle is in or on a vehicle
d) the cycle is stored out of sight, or is secured through the frame by an approved lock to the roof or bike rack attached to the vehicle;

Haven't (yet) had need to claim so I can't really say how good they are.

Would have been cheaper to change house insurers and take a £25 cancellation charge.
Probably, but we were in a rush at the time and I didn't have time to re-do the house insurance and go into the details of exactly what each insurer did/didn't cover in terms of the bikes.

I know it's hard work.
Its a total minefield :( and lots of insurers you can't get hold of the exact policy wording until you've put all your details in for the quote. I'm thinking of going back to a broker - giving them a very specific brief and seeing what they come up with. I know its generally cheaper to sort out insurance yourself but I'd be prepared to pay a little bit more to have them do all the leg work.

I've been in touch with my insurers( Aviva ) and they will insure my Cannondale road bike (£2.5K) and Ebco ebike (£1.8K ) for an extra £17 for UK use and if I call them before going abroad they will endorse me for EU travel for a little more .. what that number is I will have to wait and see but cant see it being prohibitive

We use ETA Cycle Insurance, but you need at least a silver standard lock. £12 per month.
