Heading to France at the end of the month for a couple of weeks, having never explored the East, we are thinking of heading down to Annecy and the mountains, any recommendations for campsites and places to visit. What are the roads like? We are 7.5m x 2.35 and 4 tons, any places we should avoid?

This side of France is really beautiful. Take your time and see the haut alsace area. kaysersberg, Berghiem, etc. Lots of aires, the one at Kaysersberg is very good. Then take a look at Colmar, no need to pre book anywhere. There are lots of campsites around Annecy, a really nice area, make sure you have ACSI membership. The Rhone alps area is really beautiful, Aires everywhere, lots of lovely places to stay. If you only have 2 weeks that will be enough to do. For something a bit different head for the tarn gorges area around Millau. Really beautiful area, almost deserted.
We will be following on all of September. Cant get enough of the place.

Just a thought, use maps to plan routes, the roads are just fine, no need for toll roads unless in a tearing hurry. If using sat nav my advice is dont use post codes (they apply to a large area) use GPS coordinates only when nearing the destination.

Hopefully We are going down the east side in September as well, aires and France passion, hoping to go right down to menton and park on the old customs post park, and then use train to ventimiglia and monaco ,and nice then move along the south coast to a campsite in port grimaud for a couple of nights then on to Andorra and a cross the Pyrenees to Biarritz and back up the west side all in four or five weeks
Btw has anyone parked at the customs post, is it still ok

We are heading down the eastern side of France again next month. So many lovely aires - Stenay, Charleville Mezieres, Dun Sur Meuse to name but 3. We visited the champagne region on our last tour in 2012, Epernay aire was full of 'travellers' so we moved on to Mareuil Sur Ay - very nice.

Annecy aire is great too, easy walking distance to the town and close to the lake. Gets very busy though.

Have a great time.
