Hi everyone, finally managed to convince my better half to get a passport and try camper in France for 14-17 days next year.
So my question is first two weeks of July or September?
Are things cheaper in September, is the weather that much worse then bearing in mind looking at not going to the south being our first trip in a camper in France.
Is it wise to book ferry/tunnel earlier just a month or so before we go.
Rather annoying the Ferry from Hull is no more or at least it won’t give me a price.

We have been both months😊It’s a bit quieter in September but the nights are drawing in and I do like to sit outside the camper with a bottle of wine😊!but going beg of September this year! Not booked tunnel yet!Usually do it week or two before we go as not fussy what time or day we go.But like the cheaper crossing so we usually go about 6 or 7 pm and go straight to Gravelines for the night especially now the restaurant is open adjacent to the Aire😁

Thanks, as I’m travelling from East Yorkshire I was going to go down Thursday night and stay within 39-40 miles of ferry/tunnel then 6:39-7:30 crossing to give me time to get roughly 100miles under my belt . I did Brittany 20+ years ago in car and loved it.

If you want to "wander" I would suggest September. There will be more availability in campsites if that is where you want to stay especially on the coast.

French school holidays tend to start in early July so sites may be busy. It is generally quieter in September & the weather is usually still good.

I want the Hull to Rotterdam ferry but I’m struggling to get prices. It would be perfect for me as it would mean. Thursday night sailing arriving Friday morning without the hassle of driving down to the tunnel.
September does sound better for us if it’s going to be quieter.

After the first two weeks of July it gets busy but away from the main tourist spots its still OK.
September is a good month to go to France temperatures often still in the 30's not quite so busy.

Why wait until next year its so much easier to use a Motorhome in France once you have done it you won't want to bother using your van in the UK again.

We normally book a crossing about two weeks before we go occasionally we have booked the day before going and got a good price it depends how busy they are.

I'm not sure why you are struggling to get prices unless you are looking on days when there are no sailings. If you look at going out 8 July and returning 23 July you should get a quote.

It's a rubbish website which doesn't offer dates when they do sail and you have to resort to guessing. Of course when you see the prices you may want to look at alternatives. :)

We are going to France for September. July too busy and too hot for us.

We usually head out last two weeks of June before Europe goes on holiday and the silly season starts, but, due to COVID, we have been forced to go first two weeks in September in 20 and 21, it's been between 30⁰c and 40⁰c both years which is more than hot enough for us and compares similarly to June weather.

You'll also find Aires, Stellplatz wild sites less busy and campsites provide massive discounts if you have ACSI camping card. I'd also suggest you get yourself a Camping-Car Parks Pass'Etapes card for a fiver if heading for France, we have also found a Revelout card invaluable.

Whatever you decide, have fun!

Cheers
Red.

The French holidays traditionally start on the 14 July which is the public holiday to celebrate the storming of the Bastille. They end on Assumption day, i.e. the 15 August. Those days, and the weekends around them is generally chaos on the roads. Having said that in 2019 we were meandering around Brittany until about the 20 July and the roads were not busy, compared with the SE of England and we could always find a nice place to stop.

We usually go over to Europe in the spring and autumn and have usually found the weather is generally good (except for Spring this year!) and the roads, Aires and campsites are not busy.

Some campsites in France start to close towards the end of September.

We did 3 weeks last year, last week in September and first two weeks in October.…..north of France we needed the heating on late evening and early morning, mid to south of the country was shorts and t-shirts. (y)

I should also state this is for 2023!
Holidays this year already booked. I’m quite happy to pay more for convenience. Was thinking go out via Hull as I live in Cottingham it’s very close and return via tunnel/ferry. I’m sure we’ll get sorted but I’m determined to get across one way or another😂
Last time I went it was via Ramsgate with my motorcycle.

Don't know what you are missing get across this year even if it's only for 2 or 3 weeks. Weather in the southwest is still very good Oct/Nov.

We always go away the first couple of weeks in September and have (luckily!) had fantastic weather every time. We tend to head south towards the Bordeaux area or east towards Alsace. In the southern holiday areas we find the campsites get increasingly quiet as time goes on, but in Alsace September is still peak season because its grape harvest time so the campsites are often still very busy (but mostly adults, not many kids).

July can be very busy especially the 2nd week with Bastille day on the 14th.

And August…..

Only did it once…..never to be repeated……luckily me and my son were on our motorcycles.(y)

Go July every year. Don‘t have any problems. It’s easy to workout what / where will be busy, and then choose if we want in, or out of it.

We are off in 1.5 weeks time 👌🏻👌🏻

Would normally suggest September but next year is the Rugby World cup in September so campsites around the towns hosting games will be busy but then France is A big country.

We like end of season trips as camp sites are easy to get into and cheaper (our kids always try to join us so cheaper to have them stay as well ;)). Our last trip to France in September we ended up in Deauville and had this swimming pool to ourselves as only one other couple on the camp site and it was the last week of the sites season….result!

Going from Hull why not go September and have 2 weeks on the Mosel in Germany, great weather, great country and absolutely lovely people with views to die for and only a short drive to get there.

Like us every year since 2001 up t0 2016 but we spent a lot of the time parked up at my brother's place near Limerzel at Kerfaz especially to get to the Bastille party there.

Thanks for all the suggestions. My work has shutdown during July(1 week) and whit week in May both busy weeks which is why I’d use my two floating weeks to go in September. It’s all very exciting can’t wait.

May/June or September/October for us if you are off whit weeks then May/June is best for you. We avoid France and Germany in July and August. Have a look at Stenna, Harwich to the Hook.

looks like there will be quite a few of us in France in September. Happy days :giggle: :giggle:
May be with you all then as well!!
