How do I stop alerts being sent to my e-mail as these some times arrive in the early hours and scare the hebejebees out of me in my semi concious state.

Point mouse over your username, on tab top right of screen and then choose preferences and then can untick email alerts.

If you click on your Profile page (top right) and navigate to Settings - Preferences, you can turn off emails at a Global level. Any threads you've already chosen to have emails on you'll have to go to Watched Threads, unwatch them and then if you choose watch them again you can do so without emails - you'll just get the alert prompt - top right ;)

Why would you want any emails at night from anywhere? My laptop and phone is all turned off when I go to bed.

If we're talking about a phone just turn off your internet connection at night ... simples!

If you still want to get calls but only from certain people, you can set it so that only calls from them can 'disturb' you in the night, if anyone else rings it will just stay quiet, same with texts.

That is assuming of course that you don't rely on emails for your work or social circle and that your phone is modern enough to have "Do not disturb" settings ;)
